That's a BILLION DOLLARS this government is underspending in health. A BILLION DOLLARS taken out of healthcare!

They have the money, they just don't want to spend it. Not on on hospitals or doctors or nurses or admin staff or regional health care, or anyone of a myriad of needed items.

This should be a much, much bigger story. Commitments of tens of billions of dollars are being made to dubious projects without us being allowed to know anything about how decisions are being made. It's literally the future of the nation.
The RoNS: “the most complex & expensive infrastructure programme in NZ’s recent history.”

A $56B programme… with a $49B shortfall. And all signs point to low-to-no-value for public money.

Given the huge public interest, why are the details being kept from the public, asks @connorsharp.bsky.social?

So the hotline’s 12 month budget was $400k. If we generously assume it spent only $200k given it operated for half of that time, that’s still $1000 per road cone removed. Nutty waste of money from the Coalition. 🤦‍♂️

I see Bishop's justification for merging all them ministries is that they often give politicians different advice over different issues.

Firstly, yeah, no shit. Secondly, what do you think the minister's job is?

The government is prepared to spend who knows how much on an entirely unnecessary amalgamation of ministries, but is steadily nickle and diming away small and useful programmes like the FluTracking survey.
#nzpol
Min of Health has decided not to continue with the FluTracking survey each week from next year.

What a ridiculous decision. The cost savings must be minimal

What are our taxes actually used for if not things like public health?

❌️limit it to wheelchair users only

Final new thought on this, but the reason it works when Zohran Mamdani says 'I'm only making promises I can keep' and it's not working here is that Mamdani's policy pledges are still aspirational. The things he's promising are meaningful improvements on the status quo and will genuinely help
"We've had a series of governments now who have encouraged people to be aspirational for New Zealand and have promised things that have been completely unrealistic. ... I'm not going to fall into that trap."

Just to be clear what is (and isn’t) happening here. The Govt MPs are empowering a select committee with a majority of its MPs on it to stuff more things into the government’s bill, because these things procedurally couldn’t be included in the bill when introduced.

Parliament has been pushing hard, rushing through bills and working under urgency all week. In that scramble, one bill bypassed the rules, adding things not usually allowed.
