1. Last night, 26 Senate Dems helped pass a NDAA containing a military trans sports and surgery ban and dropped demands for protections against US troop deployments in the bill.

It is the latest in the national fight over must-pass bills during the shutdown.

26 Senate Democrats Help Pass Military NDAA Containing Trans Sports, Surgery Ban, No Protection For US Troop Deployments
The bill passed by a wide margin in the Senate and will be the starting point for negotiations with the House, which contain more severe anti-trans riders.

I'm doing another print run of these "Biology is Bigger than Binaries" shirts!

Back, quite literally, by popular demand. Bullying works, sure, but so does a bunch of nice cutie patooties politely asking!

Order 'em now, I'll mail 'em in early November.

OSHA Maia, patron undergod of WEAR YOUR FUCKING PPE. (which is the text I will add to these once they dry, and then hang them conspicuously at eye level for myself. Mostly where i sand shit without a mask like an idiot.) (Idk why they're a sandhill crane.)
A photo of several lino prints spread across a table. They're of two slightly different designs, both of a sandhill crane printing in gray and green with a smokey speech bubble space and a neon green halo. One design is portrait orientation and the other is landscape. A photo of a lino print carving of a sandhill crane in progress, surrounded by carving gouges.

You made it halfway through the week *and* we still have free shipping? Sounds like the perfect time to treat yourself to a new book and support indie bookstores in the process. 📚

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

Crab, and crab peets 🥹
One of our most stunning crab spider species (Misumenoides formosipes) is very large and pretty chill, and that makes getting shots of their little feet a bit easier.

It's finally time for Skinktober!

What's that? No, I'm pretty sure it was never called anything else.

a digital painting of a juvenile five-lined skink sitting on a decorative pumpkin. it is surrounded by vine and leaves. the lizard is striped lengthwise down its body in white and black, transitioning to a bright blue tail about halfway down. the colors have been very saturated, and the shapes are abstracted to be rigid angles.

Instead of inktober, I propose just doing whatever creative project you really want to do and have been meaning to do. Don’t be afraid of people judging you or it not being good enough. As often as you’re able, set aside dedicated time to work on it like it’s school or a job. Goodluck.

Several old favorites here, like @pameladean.bsky.social's TAM LIN and DW Jones strange and wonderful FIRE AND HEMLOCK.

Also a fan of THE PERILOUS GARD by Pope, which Terri mentions later in this link of comments.

Rachel Ayers highlights six of the many fine retellings of the fairy ballad Tam Lin. I was honoured to publish @pameladean.bsky.social's extraordinary Tam Lin in the Fairy Tale Series (Tor Books), and I'm delighted to see it listed as one of the greats. It truly is. reactormag.com/a-knight-to-...

After Janet’s death in a 1979 housefire, her heartbroken sister Anne made good on all of their outstanding commissions, and mastered many subjects which had been her sister’s speciality, particularly horses. She worked until 2 days before her death, at the age of 69 in 1998.

Works by Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone, a pair of identical twin sisters who worked (primarily in gouache) by passing their shared illustrations back and forth. Together they illustrated hundreds of ads, logos, and over 100 books, including Dodie Smith’s 101 Dalmations.
