3. "Heroes" ( album version ) - David Bowie
It may seem an obvious choice, but no matter how many times I hear this song played on TV, on adverts, on the radio, in whatever form it takes, it still makes my heart beat faster as soon as it starts. It's immense, immaculate, immortal 🖤

4. London Calling - The Clash
"The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in / Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin"
Apocalypse 1979 🎵🔥🎸

5. Heart Of Glass - Blondie
I love Blondie's earlier, spiky New-Wave-meets-girl-group songs but this Disco-Punk monster is in a league of its own. The sound that producer Mike Chapman coaxed out of the band is stupendous and Debbie's voice is heavenly. Plus she looks 🔥 in the video, obvs.

"Lock your door, lock it tight: it's the new immoral Right"
For some reason, this song popped into my head today 😬

6. Another Brick In The Wall ( Part Two ) - Pink Floyd
The first Pink Floyd song I ever heard and the first single I ever bought, at the age of 13. It still sounds fantastic to these 59-year old ears, and Dave Gilmour's guitar solo as the song fades out is still a thing of wonder 🎵

7. Exodus - Bob Marley & The Wailers
"Movement of Jah people"
An epic of Rastafarian empowerment in which Marley casts himself as a Black Moses ( shades of Isaac Hayes! ) leading his people out of oppression in "Babylon" and delivering them to "Zion" and Utopia. A truly iconic song 🎵

8. Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
At the height of disco and new wave, this teenage prodigy rocked up with her incongruously romantic, spooky, prog-y take on an A-Level set text and had a massive hit. What a calling card for an epic career 🔥

9. Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
It may be a dismal, rainy Thursday here on Airstrip One, but Stevie's joyous tribute to Duke Ellington never fails to spread a little love and sunshine 💖🌞
And I defy you not to mime along to the exuberant horn section 🎺🎷

10. Marquee Moon - Television
For years I only knew the single version, then I bought the album and heard *this* - a jaw-dropping moment. The band play like their lives depend on it: the crystalline guitars, pounding bass & clattering drums leading you into a half-glimpsed netherworld 🙏🎵🔥

11. My Girl - Madness
I always thought the Nutty Boys were at their best when they mixed melancholy with madness, and this tale of young lovers trying to work each other out is, for me, the perfect example.
"She says that I don't care / She says I'm unaware / And now she says I'm weak"
