People keep saying they hate Soylent Green, but have they actually tried it?
What If Readers Like A.I.-Generated Fiction?
If economic and technological transformations have changed our relationship with literature before, they could do so again.

I can’t remember now how I came across it, but lately I’ve been digging this Nepalese recipe for ‘Golden Milk’. Of course with a bit of extra ginger and pepper.

Wild that it's just normal now for entire industries to despise the source of their revenue.
Harlequin France is firing its human translators and replacing them with—welp, you guessed it.
Harlequin France, which is owned by HarperCollins, has just confirmed that they’re shifting away from human translators with an eye to robot replacements. As The Bookseller reported this morn…

I've started the new book. It's going to be weird. And (god help me) I'm publicly committing to updating my newsletter subscribers on the journey in real time. I must be nuts.
Looking forward, looking backward
This very newsletter, marginalia , was established all the way back in 2019. I conceived of it as a way to continue the work I had done for magazines and newspapers through the previous decade, only ...

Be cool. We’re only devaluing people with *these* skills, not *those* skills. (At least for now)
This series does not teach AI writing or content replacement. It focuses on workflow efficiency, analytics, and tools that support—never replace—human creativity.

I’ve been posting about learning Spanish a bit but I haven’t yet mentioned I’ve started teaching my dog (partly so I have someone to talk to). We had a breakthrough today. I said ¿tienes hambre?* and she completely lost her shit.

*are you hungry?

In my standard talk on technology and publishing, I used to have to introduce Sam Altman. I guess more recent events have shaved a few minutes off that. If nothing else, I can always say I clocked his odiousness pretty early on.
Publisher: Do you want to put an LLM clause in the copyright statement?
Me: Definitely. How specific can we get?
Publisher: As specific as you like.

Copies have been dispatched to readers in Barcelona, Boston, and Broadbeach. You have only until Christmas Eve to grab your copy at the sale price and I'll send one your way, even if you live somewhere that doesn’t start with a ‘B’.
An elaborately constructed book in a box filled with stories and ephemera? In this economy? Fear not. @tinyowlworkshop.bsky.social has discounted the boxed edition of Ephemeral City to A$45 (pp) for a limited time. If you’ve been on the fence, now's your chance. www.simongroth.com/shop/ephemer...

There are a million things wrong about this tiny clip, but I'm convinced the worst part is how he admits that raising a child and witnessing a human mind develop in real time IS NOT "a good enough question", not one of the mysteries of humanity.
Jimmy Fallon: "And do you use ChatGPT when raising your baby?"

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."

So sad. I met Porter at the Books in Browsers conference back in the day. Lovely guy. I have fond memories of a dinner with him and a few others where he regaled us all night with stories of his family in the Deep South and from his days at CNN.
Shocked and saddened by this news. I always admired his style, his kindness, his sophistication, and the clarity of his insights. “Writings on the Ether” were an invaluable source of knowledge on digital publishing. He will be deeply missed. publishingperspectives.com/2025/12/port...
