At a Tomorrow Theater screening, Guillermo del Toro discussed the rise of AI, the future of stop-motion animation, and what character he identifies with in 'Frankenstein.'

For @portlandmercury.com, I wrote about seeing Frankenstein with @realgdt.bsky.social in attendance and the director’s wonderful relationship with our city

As part of @portlandmercury.com’s winter print issue, I made some holiday gift recommendations, including Werner Herzog’s “The Future of Truth”:

TRAIN DREAMS is on @netflix.com today BUT it’s also still showing at the @hollywoodtheatre.org, which is where you should catch it if you can—through next Tuesday. It’s worth it to see it big. My review for the @portlandmercury.com:

Welp, it looks like the Portland Metro Chamber’s solidarity with the community against ICE and a federal invasion ends at charging an impact fee to property owners who would rent their properties to detention facilities that harm neighbors & drain public resources.

Can’t say that we’re surprised!

Writing for Paste TV and Movies taught me basically everything I know about being a working critic. Allison Keene, Matt Brennan, and @sinacolad.bsky.social were all incredible teachers/editors, and I was lucky enough to take over the Movies section for 4 (pretty great) years

Editing Kyle’s work was one of the things I’m proudest of from my time at Paste, and likewise I’d say that my time editing at Paste was invaluable to figuring out who I wanted to be as a writer
very disappointed and sad that @pastemagazine.bsky.social has gutted its non music coverage. @sinacolad.bsky.social was one of my favorite people to work with and the time i spent under his tutelage and writing for Paste helped refine and focus my efforts as a writer and critic. ridiculous!

Today, Paste Magazine shuttered all its non-music verticals, a choice I am both professionally and personally heartbroken about. Sadly, I am once again looking for a place that wants to let me write about Books and TV on the regular, so hit me up if that’s you or anyone you know.

Sad to hear about @pastemagazine.bsky.social's Movies section, where I was an associate editor for around 7 years, shuttering. On top of editing so many incredibly talented writers, I was able to write a lot of pieces I am still proud of (🧵), like this 20-year look-back at BAD BOYS II:
This Is Unnecessary: Bad Boys II at 20
20 years ago, Bad Boys II doubled down on the violence, indulgence, and spectacle—because Michael Bay could.

I love how AI and technology is now wholly geared towards letting you off the hook for feeling anything that is remotely part of human life: grief, guilt, boredom, stress, empathy, fear, love
