Oh my god I am still sick and it's making me hate everything and everyone.

I am exactly the height that when I am facing the spray in my shower and rinsing my face after a gentle scrub with my lovely rosewater scented face cleanser there is a secret angle, which I had not previously found, which causes the full force of the shower's spray to rocket into my sinuses.

Cake as in "block of stuff" like.. cake of soap... rather than a baked and sweetened bready-type thing.

Sed contra: Advent is traditionally a time for contemplating death, judgement, heaven, and hell, and thus a Kendal Mint Cake Advent Calendar is far more seemly than most of the “little treat” type of Advent Calendars.

I keep getting adverts for a Kendal Mint Cake Advent Calendar, and as someone who has choked down vast quantities of Kendal Mint Cake while dangerously close to hypothermia, on an exposed cliff in a storm, desperately inching towards a safe place to stop and camp... I cannot think of anything worse.

That's how it works in a lot of places and in a lot of industries if you're looking to land in a particular environment with a particular type of company.

So no, it's not just slimeballs who have to schmooze, but like attracts like and people would be better off if they sat with that for a bit.

Hell, I didn't get my own job solely on merit. I lucked out that people I knew and had known for a long time were already there. They knew me, some knew what I am capable of, I interviewed well, had skills... but those people knowing me was absolutely what got me the job.

It's obvious, and will have been obvious, if anyone cared to pay attention.

I've been fooled, sure. What I did, though, was notice that it's plain as day if you pay attention to who they schmooze with and where they land when they switch jobs.

You don't get these jobs on merit alone.

The thing I'm gnashing my teeth about today, and have been for a while now, is the laughable idea that it's a sudden surprise when people with a particular kind of access, and a particular list in their address books, reveal themselves to be really awful human beings with garbage opinions.

There are a ton of journalists who aren't massive pieces of shit and who are upstanding, decent people.

They still can't do their work unless they know people & systems they need to know in order to get what they need to get to report the facts of a thing that happened, is happening, or may happen.

Journalism isn't magic folks. Good reporters *are* good writers, but good writers are not as rare as people think. Journalism is a game of access. Access and connections and schmoozing the right people that you meet because of those connections and that access.

This isn't always nefarious, though.

This shit doesn't happen in a vacuum. None of these people have "changed". They're just in a position and a time when they're incredibly comfortable collecting a paycheque for "doing what they love".
skullsinyourface.bsky.social
I don't have much patience for people who clutch their pearls and cry big, sloppy tears over having to confront that people they admire are actually huge pieces of shit who, in the current social climate, finally feel comfortable letting the slime ooze through the seams of their expensive outfits.

For decades she was able to consistently and reliably report with regard to a subject that relies entirely on mathematics and statistics coupled with sufficient access (the "access" is the only thing she carried over to this current iteration).

She is showing you exactly who she is. Believe her.
skullsinyourface.bsky.social
This is exactly what she's good at and who she really is.

Kani Bucho, an office boss with an entire crab for a head, is the mascot for Yokobiki, a company that makes metal roller shutters for store windows.
A mascot in a blue suit with a red crab for a head enters a building.

That's not an "echo chamber". That's simply me deciding who and what are worth my time and energy in this place and at this time.
skullsinyourface.bsky.social
"BUT THAT'S AN ECHO CHAMBER!!!!"

No. That's how I live the whole of my life. I am not on this earth to be annoyed or hurt or threatened or harassed, even mildly, by people who don't know me or see me as a person.

I don't put up with it anywhere else so why would I do that on social media?
skullsinyourface.bsky.social
What I don't have here is a firehose of the slimiest opportunists shouting the worst bigotries, tiresome reply-guys, professional argument-havers, or people who see every post as their personal platform because I use the robust moderation tools to poof them into non-existence while I carry on.

"Bluesky is an echo chamber!!!11!!one!11!!!"

What a weird thing to think.

I follow and read the musings plenty of people I do not agree with about politics, economics, social matters, tea brewing, meat cookery, road safety funding, the role of technology in our lives, etc.
skullsinyourface.bsky.social
Looking for a list of tiresome people who are unwilling to do the work (read the article and *think about it* before arguing about something not said), or are simply looking to make it all about their own current bugbear? The comments on this post are a rich vein of such tomfoolery.

I swear to fuck I don't even have to be there and those motherfuckers still manage to give me a fucking migraine.

I'm McFuckin' over it, folks.

I can't tell if it's the dance to the sound of nothing but rustling fabric or the absolutely dead serious face, but that tickled me.
