PLEASE

I don't want a "smart" fridge, or a "smart" TB, or a "smart" anything

they're not smart at all, they're just data mining tools, and I don't want any of them
Feel like there's a market opportunity in opening a luddite appliance store: non-smart refridgerators, watches that tell you the time, a themostat that you set by htting buttons, a regular lock for your door, a toaster that just pops the toast after a minute. Maybe you expand into cars with buttons.

missing even one paycheck like this would have ruined me and my young family when I was an NSF postdoc. This is heartless
Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.
It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

About links, bluesky loves them. Please unlearn the link-in-reply tricks you've been doing elsewhere and proudly share your blog posts, videos, or any other external link in your top posts so we can all go and visit your fancy websites and then get back here to discuss and repost them. Thanks!

Not only is X throttling external links, but it is also messing with its public pages. Without an account, you don't see the conversation if you go to a post. Instead, you get ads to sign up. If you visit profiles, the latest posts are not there. Useless for microblogging. Harmful to the open web.

I mean right off the bat, ’idea generation’ is laughable. LLMs cannot come up with new ideas, LLMs can only reformulate ideas it already has access to. Using an LLM for idea generation is plagiarism and no one with ever convince me otherwise.

let's remember that it was an NIH scientist who designed the core of the Moderna Covid vaccine *over a single weekend*
Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.
The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!

That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Whatever justification the incoming administration is giving for wanting to dismantle the Dept of Education, please know that the end result will include students with disabilities losing their right to an education, including losing support & services like speech therapy that they receive at school
As a former #SpecialEd attorney, I just want to be sure people get it.

Federal funds for students with #Disabilities will also disappear when the Department of Education does. And with #Medicaid at risk, so do related services (therapies etc). This is Trump’s plan.

You attain citizenship in the US in one of two ways: birthright and naturalization. Trump has campaigned to eliminate both. The calls should be understood for what they are: dog whistles that attack people of color and their children; he is not attacking white immigrants or their children.
