The biggest pie fight ever filmed, from the Great Race starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, and Peter Falk. One of my favorite movies as a kid, and the only necessary pie discourse.

I don't need the world to admit mince pie is good, I know that's a lost cause, but I DO need more people to welcome rhubarb into their lives. And not strawberry rhubarb--rhubarb is only diminished by the pairing.
The only correct pie take is that pies are like dogs—they’re all good, we just have stronger personal attachments to some than others.

The ghouls usually surrounding Trump are all deeply uncharismatic people. Being around someone actually charismatic would be a real shock to the system.

But also...where were all the ghouls? Miller and Vance and the rest really left him alone with a charismatic leader?

In the last twenty years technology made a lot of tasks related to our consumptive lives a lot easier, and now no one working in tech can conceive of a human as having anything other than a consumptive life.
I do want Google computers to read my email and skim out the obvious spam; I didn't need Google computers reading my email to spam me with Google's own redundant and/or out-of-date alerts about package deliveries on top of the emails that already told me that information
Seems like that Gmail thing isn't true but maybe there's a lesson here about what happens when you keep turning new features on by default and you make it difficult or impossible to turn them off, and also what happens when you lump useful machine learning in with forced slop under the "AI" label

Capital wants to replace human workers without investing in changing the accomodations already in place for the shape of those workers. Literally every insanely overvalued company these days is built on the promise of replacing human workers.
one of the things I really do not understand is why so much of the development of robots seems to be focused on making them bipedal like humans. Why? It's an insane allocation of resources when it would be much easier to give them three or four "legs" or come up with some new system

Because you don't know who these people are. You don't know what these organizations are. These are just names. You don't care because no one's giving you a reason to.

You're being TOLD this is weighty and important stuff, not being SHOWN that it is.

You gotta be *Character First, Concept Second.*

Late night thought: we know that Odo struggles with the details of humans in Deep Space Nine, it’s why his hair and face are like that, but he also canonically fucks. This raises a question, when he fucked did his boner look like an uncooked hot dog?

It's Straith's awards eligibility post for 2025!!

I'm putting forward two of the three stories I had published this year for your consideration. I'd love especially if you'd consider "Fishwife" for the Aurora Award for Short Fiction, since it's my mémère story 💜

One thing I don't remember ever seeing on all the "bookshelf red flag" posts (yes I'm years late to the party) was "all best sellers." Like, if you haven't picked up weird random shit in a used bookstore, or at least dug deeper at B&N than the tables up front, we're not compatible.

Great piece by Zadie Smith. When the right talks about classics or "Western" culture, these works are only important to the extent that it demonstrates their superiority, they have no interest in art in and of itself beyond that www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Wait, why did Brainworm and Dr. Snakeoil get obsessed with Canadian ostriches with bird flu? How does this further their part in the dismantling of the American state?

Yeah, we should all be pretty clear about the fact that slashing US AID was done specifically to kill brown people because Musk is obsessed with white replacement. The killing wasn't a side effect of "saving money," it was the point.
I helped make a film, out this week, called “Rovina’s Choice,” about the deaths this man without conscience or accountability has caused — already 600,000, ⅔ of them children.

The framing for all these conservatives suddenly sharing voting maps shouldn't be, "lol, these morons think land votes," because the ones in charge definitely don't think that. The correct framing is, "this is dangerous people trying to establish a narrative to further disenfranchise voters."

Holy shit. A babysitter rented this movie one night when I was like 11 and I never remembered it's name. I spent years trying to figure out wtf it was as an adult but never could. Then this comes across my feed. Man, I have such vivid memories from this movie. youtu.be/yJk7m-kjVmc

Current political divides mean there are people in our streets who don't think other humans deserve human rights, including the right to exist. It strongly disincentivizes interacting w/ strangers. A space where you can feel pretty sure about a baseline for the people around you is a big deal.

I was laid off from Teen Vogue this week, alongside multiple other phenomenal team members.

At our Summit, I was asked how it felt to be 1 of 2 Black women left and what that meant for representation. Now, there are no Black women at Teen Vogue and that is incredibly painful to think about.
