Mostly lurking, in accordance with the robustness principle. In this house we believe distortionary and redistributive issues should be separated, the notion of a "fiduciary" is essential to the future of democracy, and fascism must be destroyed.

Just to be super clear. Postmedia is owned by Chatham a New York hedge fund with strong links to Donald Trump. they push pro conservative message in their newspapers, both in editorial and in their news coverage.
No wonder Pierre Poilievre want the CBC defunded. Canada would never see the truth again. Why is CANADA allowing this?

The "Elbows Up" movement did a lot to raise awareness among ordinary Canadians about how we could successfully detach ourselves from the US economy by supporting local businesses, etc.

We need the same, but for Canadian corporations that may be supporting human rights abuses in the United States.

on the plus side I think direct US involvement in the referendum is likely to involve heavy amounts of treason and crimes and extremely unpopular

the bad side is what happens when they lose

A lot of folks don't realize the social contract is actually a cease fire in some ways.
we've sort of reached the platonic ideal of the paradox of tolerance here. they've repudiated the social contract, thus it definitionally no longer protects them or binds you vis-a-vis them
If you won't bring severe consequences for these relentless crimes against humanity, if you won't even consider it, if you won't even try then what is the point of you? Not just as a politician; as a human being.

i suspect there are a lot of morons in a lot of european capitals right now wringing their hands about the risk of escalation. here's the truth: the real risk is failure to escalate. backing down is showing weakness. trump will know it.

show strength instead.

If it happens, I think we have to, otherwise we are likely next for the Yank gangsters
Like if we put meaningful export tariffs on energy, potash, and lumber it would be very noticeably felt in the US. It would also absolutely fuck those industries in Canada. I don’t think a government could sustain that very long in peacetime

To be honest, I want nuclear deterrence more than a new pipeline.
The second editorial the Globe has written in the two days since the Venezuela invasion, both using the invasion to push the case for a new pipeline — as if a change in international politics changes anything about oil's long-term future or the Canadian Constitution.
Globe editorial: In a national emergency, Canada does not have a moment to lose
The measures needed to safeguard this country’s sovereignty will take years. We must start without any further delay

I get the discomfort about legalized assisted dying, but it really is the most humane possible outcome. Certain conditions are so miserable that death is obviously preferable, and no other right in this world is as fundamental to a free life than the right to choose its duration.

As I have said long time, the court really did take over the job of social issue response with pressure relief votes as legislature deferred. Executive agencies really did take over the job of creating legislation as the legislature became evermore calcified.

Everything is the legislature breaking.

In effect, Grok has answered the question: What sort of logically internally consistent worldview does it take to produce content that won’t routinely offend MAGA sensibilities. And the answer is “a Nazi worldview.”

here's a serious thought: if things go to shit in the US (full Orban style hybrid regime, if not worse) - the US is likely to turn against Canada in an attempt to establish "cultural security" as a result of American emigres seeking refuge here
this is why Canadian political thought needs to think deeply about what a hostile NatCon power on our southern border means for us

You guys need to wise up, you’re not dealing with conservatives or libertarians trying to implement conservative or libertarian policies. You are dealing with fascists trying to destroy the idea of the truth and replace it with the exercise of power.

personally i think one should just ignore anti-anti-trump academics who have done nothing but obscure the reality of the situation facing the nation in favor of grinding axes against people they don’t like

We can debate what to do with powerless nazis in a liberal society. Maybe they should be tolerated, maybe they shouldn't. But when nazis take power, there's only one thing to do. Don't hesitate.
