If you’re connected with NOAA’s GLERL, or other Great Lakes teams affected by federal cuts + shifts, I’d love to hear from you.

I’m a ProPublica reporter in Michigan with a longtime interest in water.

NOAA's #GreatLakes Environmental Research Lab will be taking an "indefinite hiatus" from communications due to staff cuts. GLERL communicates critical weekly updates about the extent of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie - like the one that left my hometown of Toledo without drinking water in 2014

When science becomes politicized, scientists have to talk about politics. Telling them to focus on the science is not productive and won’t get them to do it.

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer.

Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

I had a sad week last week (nothing dire or cat-related, just stupid bs that wears you down), but then today my friend Adelle was casually like “oh, I have something for you” and pulls out AN ENVELOPE OF VINTAGE CAT PHOTOS. It was the right thing at the right time to make everything better. 💕
