I'll stay with the Alien franchise. One of the most harrowing things I've seen is what happens to humans when the Alien catches them. They're not killed; they're turned into gelatinous eggs for FACEHUGGERS. One of the most horrifying horror world-building concepts I've ever seen.

Q2: I lean into the erasure of self in service to the machine (ie, work/office/The Man/literal machines), which skirts the edge of what you're asking here. Now with AI in the mix I think what it means to "dehumanize" in fiction has taken on new and (for me) unexplored aspects.

Q2: I lean into the erasure of self in service to the machine (ie, work/office/The Man/literal machines), which skirts the edge of what you're asking here. Now with AI in the mix I think what it means to "dehumanize" in fiction has taken on new and (for me) unexplored aspects.

I'm trans and Catholic, so for me losing (or crushing) the soul will always be true dehumanisation. The body is just the thing I'm bending to my will, through the power of oestrogen. The flesh is a vessel for the human.

I'm trans and Catholic, so for me losing (or crushing) the soul will always be true dehumanisation. The body is just the thing I'm bending to my will, through the power of oestrogen. The flesh is a vessel for the human.

Dehumanizing to me means loss of self; to be belittled and abused to the point that you lose your will to live or you wonder why you have no purpose. Obliterating the self would be the ultimate goal of whatever is doing the dehumanizing. Look at war, capitalism, and bigotry.
