Image: cover of STRAW MAN by K. A. Silva, illustration by Talhi Briones. Cassie, a Black woman in a flowing cardigan and skirt, looks over her shoulder at Jack, a white man in a suit and tie. Glowing magic vines swirl from Cassie's fingers to curl around Jack. Straw sticks out of his sleeves as he adjusts a cufflink. They stand back to back in a pumpkin patch under a blue sky. Cover for WENDIGOGO by K.A. Silva, art by Sally Jackson: Morty, a white man in blue sweater and jeans, looks suspiciously over his shoulder at the monster looming behind him. It has an elk skull with glowing red eyes and dripping fangs, exposed ribs under dirty fur, and long arms ending in wicked claws. They stand in front of a swirling blizzard of snow at night. image: cover of STRAW SONG by K.A. Silva, illustration by Sandra Chang-Adair. Modern witch Theo, a young white woman with short orange hair wearing a tight bodice, ruffled skirt, and Wiccan jewelry, wields a glowing magic needle and thread. The Scarecrow of Oz stands beside her looking worried, wearing a formal green coat and peaked hat, hefting a shovel as a weapon. They face unseen enemies at dusk in a cornfield. image: cover for STRAW SOUL by K.A. Silva, illustration by Sandra Chang-Adair. The Scarecrow of Oz, in a formal blue coat open to reveal his stitched burlap chest, tugs a handful of straw from his own body, looking determined. Witch Theo, a young white woman with shrt orange hair, wearing a hoodie printed with a pentagram, stands beside him. She clutches a basket of treats protectively and brandishes a broken bottle as a weapon. Spears ring them in, wielded by unseen opponents. They stand ready to defend themselves in a heated cavern far underground, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites.

people don’t understand that data center resource consumption driven by AI is just like… giving a person climbing a mountain a set of encyclopedias to carry with them

adapting to climate change was already a struggle, and now we have carry all this extra shit that provides no added value

Chuck's apple reviews are wonderful, and a welcome respite from the daily horrors. If you're in a region where apple orchards thrive, check out your local offerings! And be sure not to eat the evil ones.

Do you hear the distant rumbling? The thrum and tumble? That's the herd of apples, on the move again. Careful. Don't spook 'em or they'll stampede.

What I mean is, today's apple review is live. Up now: HOLSTEIN. P.S. there's also some waffle-piffle about art and audience in there too if you care.
Apple Review #11: Holstein (With bonus Ruminations On Art Vs Audience)
The push and pull of art is, I think, the part where you do it for yourself versus where you do it for other people. And yes, this is sort of about me making my weird apple videos. And no, I don&#8…

A fringe group wants the field of psychiatry to regress back to the days when stereotypes and prejudices resulted in mental illness diagnoses for marginalized populations.

In a new reported piece, @evanurquhart.bsky.social examines Genspect's call for the re-psychopathologization of trans identity.

Reminder: being queer or trans is NOT a mental illness, and the reason we suffer higher rates of depression and anxiety is because of all the fucking bigots who try to make our lives hell for no goddamn reason. Anyone claiming otherwise is simply an asshole undeserving of respect or debate.

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."

the only appropriate response will be to triple down on supporting the targeted groups rather than to do what so many people usually do which is to run away from them.

Energy requirements for AI mean that the only way for the bubble not to burst would require companies to multiply their carbon footprint to an unimaginable degree. Right now, while AI is barely functional and mostly a novelty for the lazy, it requires so much energy that data centers rival cities.

This week's Thursday snippet comes from Wooing the Witch Queen, which is on sale in the UK this month for only 99p! Snap up my sweet, nerdy hero and the terrifying witch queen he falls for: stephanieburgis.com/books/wooing-the-witch-queen

#romancelandia
An image of the front cover of Wooing the Witch Queen shows a sinister witch queen in a spectacular beaded dress embracing her handsome and adoring new librarian (in a black wizard's robe) inside a library of magic filled with crows and masks and flying books. Above and beside it is this snippet from the book:
Felix had never been more grateful for his concealing mask and cloak than when he'd emerged onto the tower roof to find Queen Saskia with her head thrown back, lips parted, a cloud of crows swirling around her and energy crackling so intensely through the air that it lifted the hair at the back of his neck.
It should have been a terrifying sight: the wicked witch of Kitvaria no doubt summoning a terrible storm of magic to rain down upon her enemies.
But it had stopped his breath for quite a different reason.
