Not anymore ancient than bacteria tho 😑
Some archaea—an ancient group of microorganisms—have an entirely novel genetic code, according to a new study in Science.

The findings expand our understanding of how alternative genetic codes evolve and hint at new molecular tools for biotechnology applications. https://scim.ag/4omApQ7
An archaeal genetic code with all TAG codons as pyrrolysine
Multiple genetic codes developed during the evolution of eukaryotes and bacteria, yet no alternative genetic code is known for archaea. We used proteomics to confirm our prediction that certain archae...

Newest preprint from our lab: a new family of promising synthetic CO2 fixation cycles that may outcompete the Calvin cycle and that Vittorio Rainaldi realized to a great extent in E. coli! Up to 11 heterologous enzymes in a cascade supporting CO2 fixation & growth! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Modular in vivo engineering of the reductive methylaspartate cycles for synthetic CO2 fixation
Biological carbon fixation is currently limited to seven naturally occurring pathways. Synthetic carbon fixation pathways have the potential to surpass aerobic natural pathways in efficiency, but none...

On the topic of weird "hydrogenases", I stumbled upon this slightly older paper from Heider and Szaleniec et. al: W-dependent aldehyde oxidoreductase (AOR) using H2 to reduce aromatic carboxylic acids (via ACS Catalysis) 🤯

What Helena says
Make your own sticker against #Fascism

Woody Guthrie used his music to fight in the 1940ies. Let his guitar be a reminder to us that we all have tools available to stand up.
As biologists, we are trained to See, Understand, Document, and Report - let's apply these today!

While spending time with records on this otherwise uneventful Sunday, I was reminded of a compilation we published in 2010. On "Fly Russia" we showcased Moscow's budding beat scene. Would not be possible today, I guess? 😑😑

As if Kleptoplasty wasn't weird enough already...
Photosynthetic sea slugs can decapitate themselves & regenerate whole body from the detached head (without the heart or guts), while the shed body do not regenerate. The process takes ~2-3 weeks. A new model for regeneration?

Extreme autotomy and whole-body regeneration in photosynthetic sea slugs
Autotomy, the voluntary shedding of a body part, is common among animals. Mitoh and Yusa report an extreme case of autotomy with the shedding of the main body, including the whole heart, and subsequen...

Meiner Erfahrung nach leidet das 🇩🇪 Wissenschaftssystem an:

1. Keine formelle Schulung Gutachtenschreiben

2. Maßstäbe schwer zu definieren

3. Prätention & Animosität

und dann kommt die @dfg.de idR mit nur 2 Gutachten um die Ecke - ich habe eine Hall of Shame of inadequate and incorrect reviews 🤡
