No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

So far so good: I've only had to crawl under the layout twice today. #modeltrains #modelrailroads

One of our members is putting together a really nice farm scene on our show layout. #modeltrains #modelrailroads

Mistakes were made in touching up the road at the crossing, but the sand verge looks pretty good for a starting point. Needs lots more work, but it'll do for the show this weekend. #modeltrains #modelrailroads

Came across this vintage beauty tonight.

And two days before the show, I find a switch with a broken stock rail. Well, it was on the list to be replaced eventually. Eventually just came sooner than expected.

I knew that morning that the shuttle was launching around lunch time, so after I ate, I went up to the A/V room off the library. My mom was working as a librarian at Amherst Regional Junior High School, so I was a frequent visitor and no one raised an eyebrow when I arrived to watch.

Someone got a bit too precious when this siding was originally laid and used a much lower profile roadbed. So, down to the table we go to relay the whole siding instead of just the 1.5 inches at the end of the module. #modeltrains #modelrailroads

Rep Ro Khanna gets it.
Congress is not powerless. Democrats must unify around an actual agenda.

1. Vote no on DHS funding bill.

2. Repeal the multi-year $75 billion funding for ICE.

3. End qualified immunity for ICE agents.

4. Investigate and prosecute every single ICE agent who broke the law.

"Yet our greatest threat isn't the outsiders among us, but those among us who never look within."

If you haven't already, make sure you check out her poem for Renee Good, which is equally breathtaking.
The heartbreakingly beauty of Amanda Gorman’s words for humanity. Be the light. Save a soul.

This is what we mean when we say we want Democratic Congresscritters to act. Don't just talk, DO something. You're not as powerless as you pretent.

That it's F-ing Bill Kristol who's writing these words is almost unimaginable, especially to anyone who was politically aware in the early aughts.
AND IMPEACH AND REMOVE.

We need to clamor for that even if the votes aren't there—yet.

Kludgy, again, but it works to throw the crossover with the DPDT switch seen at top. Honestly pretty psyched I was able to figure this out and got it right the first time.

This whole thread is worth a read (it offers some real hope in the midst of the chaos), but this one post made me laugh out loud:
"Another friend put it to me like this: "ICE has made the classic Nazi mistake. They've invaded a winter people in the winter.""
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Stupid Lowes playing stupid soft rock classic "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg (immortalized in Bloom County as "Dan Fogerburp") so it's stuck in my head more than 12 hours later.

Haven't opened it ever. I see enough bullshit in my daily life. Why in hell would I choose to add more?

This whole Steelers thing is tricky for me. On the one hand, my wife is a lifelong Steelers fan and I want her to have nice things. On the other hand SUCK IT AARON RODGERS!
And I say that as a lifelong Packers fan.

Sheesh.

Finished a prototype for an improved crating system for the club's traveling layout. It's rough, but the modules are firmly bolted to the cart and each other, which is a monumental improvement over the slide-in racks.

My plans for new modules on my club's traveling layout. Most of the current scenery is very rural, but we're 45 minutes from LA; we should have a city scene! Still some spots to figure out, but overall, I'm happy with the design. #modeltrains #modelrailroad

My front lawn when I got home from work today. Fortunately, no one was hurt, none of the vehicles are ours, and the house was untouched. This in a 35 MPH zone in which people routinely drive 20+ over.
