Always thinking about how one of the major reasons Nintendo stuck with cartridges for the N64 was that CD drives were still kinda expensive during its development, but then the N64 got delayed just long enough that once it came out CD drives started getting cheaper.

A neat Easter Egg for this San Francisco Rush 2049 U.S. magazine ad? The store is called Logg's TV Emporium, after Ed Logg (Asteroids and Centipede co-designer & co-creator of the Rush series!)

We respectfully ask that you please refrain from revealing specific plot points in advance of the season’s debut to allow viewers the opportunity to experience storylines as they unfold, including but not limited to:

*that the main character is a vampire

*how he got his surfboard

Five-year-old me: Oooh, that Batman cartoon! What adventures will he go on today?

*the villain is left in tears, unable to process their fears and obsessions. And Batman, a looming presence born of the inability to rationalize terror, is the only one there to comfort them*

Me: Oh. Huh.

Chotiner: Tell me what you found interesting about these vampires.

Documentarian: Well, it's just -- the group dynamics, I guess.

Chotiner: I can see that. I can see finding Nandor, Laszlo and Nadia entertaining.

Documentarian: Exactly.

Chotiner: So. How many people did you watch them murder?

This seems like a maliciously put headline to make people feel a certain way.

Wikipedia is not partaking in generative AI. They are making AI companies and scrappers having to pay for training their modules off wikipedia texts. And having an AI (not that ai) tasked with updating dead links.

I was telling one of my kids that it was physically impossible for an ad to play between songs on any of the records I own, and they asked "and you only have to pay for it once?" and you could see how strange that seemed. You cannot overstate how many basic rules of media consumption have changed.

you will have to pry the millennial “lol” from my cold dead hands. i don’t know how else to express minor despair. if i didn’t say “lol” after admitting i’m a husk inside, i’d have to develop emotional resilience, and i simply don’t have time for that

This was probably one of the last games to ship with old-style physical copy protection.
The disc had no DRM, no CD install key, you could rip it or make as many copies as you wanted.

if you didn't have the CD case liner with the number grid though, you weren't getting into the game!
Connecting... Dialling... Hacking...

Immersed from the first moment the game boots up into a world of clandestine internet crime and activism, and in one of my favourite game OSTs to this day.
