Yeah its going to be a bad week for markets.

Unless of course Trump TACOs. Or the SC says no to his tariff policies.

Either way, if you're an institution HIDE YOUR MONEY UNDER THE MATTRESS!!!! (individual investors just chill out unless you expect to need that money in the next 6-18 months).

The minute that my local Publix rips out theirs I'll know we're in a real recession. If 12 teens (one cashier, one bagger each) are cheaper than those things we're in deep shit!
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
I don't even know that's a real trend. Sure commercial 3rd spaces are more popular, but so are things like public parks. Community events that are often free are held in these a lot more and stuff like community gardens or volunteer groups are still super common.
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
Nope, public parks have expanded in the US since the 90s and they are very well used. And they continue to expand both in programming and number of parks. Being there for free is the norm.

It turns out that once you correct for this error, unemployment is actually rising faster for NON-degree workers - meaning that explanations in terms of AI replacing the college-educated workforce don't make much sense, and this looks a lot more like an across-the-board labor market slowdown.

From the piece: "Labour market entrants without a degree have seen a 2.4 point rise [in unemployment]. This is very different to the much more modest 0.7 point rise among... non-grads in their mid-twenties who are sheltered from today’s harsh hiring conditions." (For degreed workers, it's 1.3%).

Amazing he still has any money left having apparently funded every single liberal to socialist protest for at least the past 3 decades!

Her first statement dedicated the prize to him lmfao!
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
She even dedicated her prize win to Trump!
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
No, this whole "snub at Trump" thing falls apart when you learn about her. She's a Trump ALLY who have vocally supported his murder of her fellow countrymen and a US (and even Israeli) invasion. Presumably to help put her in power instead. www.bbc.com/news/live/c1...
Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado wins
Nominations closed in January but US President Donald Trump had led a public campaign to win the award.

Sorry you don't want the government to take responsibility for its choices. But hey, if you find statements from members of the government condemning this choice then I'll happily change my stance from "Norway wanted this" to "Norway chose assholes to run the prize but realized they made a mistake".
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
What? In what way am I wrong that Norway's parliament chooses these guys? If the government chooses who heads it then its got responsibility for their decisions.
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
They're appointed by the parliament of Norway and its current membership is majority former Norweigan politicians. So I consider it close enough to just say Norway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegi...

Even supports Trump bombing the boats! Folks who only look at US politics really seem to be missing this was the most-pro Trump choice the committee could have made without breaking their timing rules.
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
If the nation that could do that was extrajudicially murdering random members of my own country I'd probably reconsider which is going to be the bigger evil.

Not everyone in the Venezuelan opposition backs this, Machado does because she's not anti-dictatorship, she's just a tool of the US.
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
I'd interpret this as Norway trying to compromise with Trump. Machado is his ally and this will provide propaganda support for his Venezuela regime change/possible invasion efforts. This prize may actually help start a war. If Norway was going to do this they should've just fed Trump's ego instead.
surpluscornbread.bsky.social
Nah, Norway basically folded on this. Machado is a Trump ally who supports his policies. Invasion of Venezuela to help a "peace prize winner" incoming...

surpluscornbread.bsky.social
This prize is a farce that is helping Trump. Let's be clear about that. Machado is someone who has vocally supported Trump murdering her own countrymen in the Caribbean because she's not for Venezuela but for the US and even specifically for the Trump regime.

This is not a "snub of Trump" by Norway. If anything, this is the next best thing to Norway's parliament voting for directly Trump. Machado is someone Trump has vocally supported and this is during Trump's murder spree in the Caribbean that's seems designed to justify invasion.

Fuck this prize.

The only quibble I'd have here is his objection to western imperialism does appear in practice to mostly be rhetorical only. His vision of Turkish goals occassionally is at odds with western power, but those are temporary and limited compared to the long term collaboration he has with it.

Should folks let that color their perceptions of the world to this extent? Of course not. But this was how many people behaved else the "being anti-Israel is anti-semitic" argument would have never worked and Zionists wouldn't have pushed it so much. Anti-Zionists Jews proved to many it was false.
