For all of the educators trying to deal with AI, I did a deep dive in early June and these are the four articles I decided to assign to my students.

1. This is the longest of the bunch, but so wonderfully comprehensive.

We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

The Commerce Department threatening to take over Harvard's patents shows the extent to which the federal government is trying to pressure the university into a settlement. They are trying everything possible. (gift link)

Silvie Langs Diss.

So.

I went looking for you
in the parlor rafters
where you would eat
your salted caramel
across the table, sharing
icy bites in August’s
simple meandering heat.
You had already flown away.
So, my mind wandered,
wondering if you found
new flavors to sample,
or, simply melted
into my memories

Universities all over Europe are cutting language programs and closing the doors to the world. We want to get a more complete picture: where, when, why?
If you know of any such cases, please tell us (and share the link with your language and linguistics contacts)!

www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQO...

While I understand the reasoning, even lean toward supporting it, it inevitably raises the question of the pressure posed on those of us who completed or will complete our PhDs after 2023.
I just read a clearly AI-fueled or AI-written book in my academic niche, and while I stumble to finish it, I predict that future historiography will have literature categories and markers like *published post 2024* or *published ante 2024*. Our days will be seen as the barrier between these worlds.
