Let untold stories unfold in a “ghost nation” so paradoxical some say it doesn’t exist.

(Disclaimer: ghosts guaranteed for late August through mid-September travel only. Limit one spirit per tourist group. May not be combined with other offers.)

Taiwan's undeveloped natural hot springs ('wild hot springs') are one of the best travel experiences in Taiwan. Sadly, access is getting more difficult due to restrictions (for safety reasons) and constant natural disasters. Be well prepared with lights etc.

Planning to move house here in Taiwan. A friend suggests I go to seek the help of 土地公 / tǔdì gōng, the local earth god. I ask whether I should speak to the god of the place I'm leaving, or the place I'm moving to. My friend says either is okay because the tǔdì gōngs "keep their data in the cloud."

Interview with director of Left Handed Girl—representing Taiwan at the Oscars—is featured in the latest episode of BBC Arts Hour.

Shih-Ching Tsou’s family drama set in the night markets of Taipei has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and is streaming on Netflix.

The World #Indigenous Traditional Games kicks off in #Taiwan today!

The mascot is inspired by the Formosan wild boar, a symbol of strength, endurance, and bravery. Tribal markings represent cultural identity and exchanges. The design reflects the perseverance and vitality of Indigenous communities.

Just a short hop from the airport, you can ride a giant lily pad in Taoyuan. Definitely a hidden attraction!

Entrance fee of NT$80 ($2.60 USD) plus NT$30 ($1 USD) for the lily pad experience.

Maybe it's because I've just come back from Taipei, but Left-Handed Girl 左撇子女孩 may be my favourite film of the year. A family drama, and a love letter to Taipei (and its night markets).

Looking for the best places to capture the Taipei 101 fireworks? 🎆
My new map highlights the top spots—mostly on the east side where smoke is minimal.
Arrive early, expect crowds, and think ahead about how to get home.
No secret empty spots—unless you own a rooftop. 😉

There’s actual logic behind the name of Taipei’s most famous mountain. But no actual pachyderms.
I'm assuming that this is roughly what they're seeing when they call it "Elephant Mountain":

Quite the endorsement!

It’s one of the safest places in East Asia for solo female travelers significantly better than Japan or South Korea.

Georgetown’s 2025 WPS index gives Taiwan an 82 in the Women's Perception of Community Safety category vs 71 and 72 scores for the other two, respectively.
My travel-shy daughter had a blast studying there and going on adventure all across the whole island !

There’s a range of nature activities outside Taiwan’s cities, but this NYT piece sure does read as if the author liked Taipei best.

That said, it did seem a remote, amenity filled hotel tucked away in the forested interior is a good choice. Check out Hoshinoya Guguan or Silks Place Taroko Gorge.

A recent ad for Taiwan Beer references the viral hand gesture national team captain Chen Chieh-hsien made after winning the Premier12 championship in late 2024.

(It’s meant to highlight the absence of “Taiwan” on the jersey; the team must compete as “Chinese Taipei”.)
