i’ll end this little brainstorm by just asking what it is, exactly, that the MAGA right likes about the United States, since it explicitly rejects those things that make this nation distinctive — its pluralism, its revolutionary heritage and egalitarian aspirations, and its republican institutions

The man is the #1 public health menace in the United States. Measles comes in second place. At least measles can’t destroy the entire vaccine effort in the United States. RFK Jr can and is doing so.

Of all the writers who've exposed themselves as a Dipshit Clown during the last decade, Conor's the Dipshit Clowniest.
Not going to read them all because jesus fucking christ but this is nasty work from Friedersdorf

The end of the Jessie Diggins race will get significant play in primetime tonight, I suspect. Absolutely inspiring but also ... kinda hard to watch. One of the most resilient athletes anywhere.

Tonight ought to slow the roll on the "Will McDaniels get a third shot at a head coaching gig?" discussion.

He's the best. (I mean Alan. Vrabel's pretty good, too, though.)
This is a great piece. Loved this anecdote.

Is anybody ever gonna take a step back and realize the "Russia Russia Russia" people — derided as lunatic wine moms — were actually underplaying the foreign influence stuff, and the loud people who kept insisting it was all fake are now saying Jeffrey Epstein was kind of a cool guy?

Donald Trump has never apologized to the Exonerated 5, who were TEENAGERS when they were falsely convicted.

He still says these innocent men are guilty.

This is the ad Trump took out with his own money against them back in the day.

HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN RACIST.

From The Anthem: You can find plenty of examples of principled stands in U.S. sports over the years ... but oh, how things have changed.
Check the standings
As Team USA marches into the Olympics, more than a few principles have gone up in flame.

Everything else sucks, but it truly is the Golden Age for lovable mascots who crave fiery death. #poptarts
In this week's Receipts, I wrote about "Coalie," the Trump admin's anime-like new mascot for coal; and other failing efforts to revive manly sectors like mining and manufacturing. www.thebulwark.com/p/donald-tru...

The Olympics are here. The World Cup is coming. The country is fractured. Introducing The Anthem, my attempt to figure it all out.

How the hell can they negotiate with Johnson after the comments about the 2020 election the other day? There's not an ounce of good faith.
Core political tension for Democrats here. If you get a deal, you own it and now your rhetoric about how Republicans are doing anti-democratic authoritarianism remains true, but doesn't seem as sincere since you keep making deals with them. 1/2

Everybody has it backwards.

Billionaires aren’t buying up these institutions to make money. They’re buying them to kill them. Same as the oligarchs destroying government and social programs and things like weather forecasting and regulatory bodies.

They’re creating a world they control completely

I am biased because alt-weeklies formed me as a reader and a journalist, but I pitch this idea all the time everywhere I go. Communities need a raucous, widely accessible cultural and political touchstone in some usable form. The knowledge and experience are always there, if someone has the capital
I still think the best idea for progressive donors is to just revive every alt-weekly in the country and staff them with 10 reporters each.
I wrote a bit about the misguided effort by Democrats to replicate Joe Rogan the right-wing podcast ecosystem.

You don't see a lot of "Lighten up, Toots" anymore ... quite the throwback.
Trump to Kaitlan Collins after she pressed him on getting justice for Epstein survivors:

"No wonder CNN has no ratings because of people like you. You know, she‘s a young woman. I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen you smile. I‘ve known you for 10 years. I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen a smile in your face."

In a non-Crazy Pills world, the meticulous work @ddale8.bsky.social did in 2016, documenting years upon years of lies, would have sunk the campaign.
Sullivan is great and right. But it's been five years since the Post documented that this guy lied 30,000 times in one term, and it's had zero effect on how Trump's claims are treated, and the only plausible solution left is, overwhelmingly, that they would prefer to tell lies and help him tell lies
“The idea that Trump is ordering ICE to soften up — whether at protests or in yanking people out of their homes or by rearranging the hierarchy — is hard to believe, and in fact, should not be believed.”

Sometimes you have to say it out loud to appreciate how dire t all is:

The president just openly declared his plans to steal the midterm elections — in an interview with the former number two person at the FBI.
Trump: "These people were brought to our country to vote, & they vote illegally. The Republicans should say, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting. We have states that I won that show I didn't win. You're gonna see something in Georgia"
