It's a notoriously low-risk, high-reward crime. I attended a well-resourced, painstakingly planned police cycle theft sting operation years ago, knocking on doors at dawn. The only thieves caught were at a roadside bike rack with their stolen bikes when officers happened to stop for a comfort break

Societal benefits: €100mn, of which almost €80mn is from wellbeing improvements - i.e. participants reporting more life satisfaction

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

My attention was immediately caught by the claim that digital ID would help the 1 in 10 adults without a physical photo ID. Well ok, what about the 1.6m adults who don't have any kind of digital device? Or the 7.9m without basic digital skills? (Source: www.goodthingsfoundation.org/policy-and-r...)

Yay! After a turbulent rollercoaster of emotions these past days, this image brings me joy. It's finally where it should be -- orientations!
Order it for your library, read it, cite from it, critique it ...
The SAGE Handbook of Decolonial theory on my shelf. A headman and James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time are placed next to the handbook.

9/ I had launch with Paulina Borsook last month in Oakland. Her life is hard, but she still has a lot to say! She's trying to raise funds to get a new version of the book reissued on the Internet Archive.

Some of her friends have a running GoFundMe to support her:

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

Guess this is what they mean when they say “Rh@desia will never die”

It's really straight outta Rh#desia
The couple - who have two children, Isabella, nine, and Harvey, seven - sent the rest of their belongings over in a 40ft shipping container for £8k and have now "settled in" to life in Harare. They say it has given them a "better standard of living" - with their children able to attend private school for £8,750 each per year. They said they had also sent one of their maids on a cookery course and she now cooks "most" of their meals.
