Anyway. I wrote a one-page ttrpg this summer, the first one since that disastrous experience.

not exactly a novelist, but omitting Walter Benjamin from "philosophers who make art" is unfortunate. (Also Saidiya Hartman and Christina Sharpe, if we toss "philosopher" in favour of "theorist".)

By the way, it's National Editor Appreciation Day.

Nobody ever reads a great article and thinks, "Dang, that was some tight editing." But editing is a big part of how it got to be great.

So writers, if you've ever worked with a good editor, shout 'em out.

Every literary festival or theatre should condemn this, but as Sonia says, they won’t. They will cowardly disguise themselves by saying it’s “politics” and that they aren’t “political”. The storming of the National Theatre of Palestine is a crime not only on Palestinians, but on Palestinian art.
I can’t wait for PEN to comment on the Israeli intelligence forces storming the Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem and threatening the whole cast of the children’s performance and the audience if they didn’t leave in five minutes.

Because they won’t.

Ultimately, framing science fiction as a utopian 'fix the future' solution instead of art is not dissimilar to claiming genAI can do the same. It's a form of cultural greenwashing, imo, that distracts from the actual work of holding our institutions responsible for capitalist ecocide.

I like a lot of things poems can be but in some basic way this is what I want from them most, the kind of attention to notice nests built "Of pliant twigs and the softest moss and grasses" and clarity of language to put that into a latticework of being however briefly alive

"Wapnintu’tijig They Sang Until Dawn", Tiffany Morris: nature undergoing profound change and the swamp mermaid experiencing it all, both the loss and the beauty. I loved the careful, skittish POV here & vivid details of disturbing change.

"The Gannets", Anna Kavan (1945): her stories frequently seem to concern the absence of meaning (either it has disappeared or, as here, never actually mattered). This very brief story is a jolt of vivid irrationality.
