second medievalish-set fantasy I've read this year that literalizes the enemies of the "Christendom" analogue into actual evil nonhuman monsters who, among other things, eat people.

Maybe the authors think they're doing something clever here, idk, but it's not working for me

it feels important to engage with every possible angle of a work

I understand avoiding that crit if someone wants the novelty of reveal

but the idea that people should cater their write-ups to how recent something is feels anti-art
