Some people just like making dirty dishes for the sake of having more stuff to clean.
I just found out that my spouse makes a PB&J sandwich using the same knife for both toppings, instead of one knife for each separate container.

We've been married for over 16 years. I cannot believe I just discovered this NOW.

Is it 1 knife or 2 when making PB&J? Chime in!

One of the things that sucks about limited time off as a teacher is trying to schedule end of life stuff for a pet.

Bleagh.

I think an important metric for how effective AI is in education is seeing how well students can demonstrate understanding without AI after having learned with it.

Very little of the discussion I've seen treats AI as a scaffold rather than a crutch.

Important to note that the first pro listed is not a pro but at the very very very best a pro/con. Generative AI's greatest use right now is by students to avoid reading and writing.

How can you have a movie titled The Wrecking Crew and not have it be a Matt Helm reboot?

Who Would Jesus Kill?
Editorial in the National Catholic Reporter: "The vice president's comments justifying the death of Renee Good are a moral stain on the collective witness of our Catholic faith. His repeated attempts to blame Good for her own death are fundamentally incompatible with the Gospel."
Catholic Vice President Vance takes to social media to justify killing of Renee Good
After the tragic shooting of Renee Good at the hands of ICE, the Catholic vice president of the United States took to social media to justify the killing.

Call your reps and tell them that if they don't put forward and support a no confidence vote in the current leadership, that you will support, both financially and by volunteering, their opponents to the best of your ability in the next election.
Stop saying that all Schumer and Jeffries ever do is write strongly worded letters. Bullshit. They're not strongly worded at all.

I read this at the beginning of last year, and it felt like it might be the best thing I'd read all year.

I'm not sure it was, but only because I've enjoyed so much of what I've read this year.
THE RAVEN SCHOLAR has me in an absolute chokehold, what an incredibly well-paced jewel of a book, I love the feeling of looking at the 400 remaining pages & feeling the anticipatory loss of it coming to an end

I'm off to go watch a football game in a minute, so these are just first thoughts.

I think the locus of lines connecting tangent points of all possible planes with two spheres creates a cone whose axis goes through the center of both spheres.

After that it's just arithmetic.
Three mutually tangent spheres with radii 1, 2, and 3 units are centered, respectively, at (0,0,0), (3,0,0), and (0,4,0). There are only two planes tangent to all three spheres, and they intersect in a line in the x-y plane. Find an equation (in x&y) for that line.

My conspiracy theory is that this Netflix NFL thing is only being done to make ESPN look good in comparison.
netflix is doing amazing things with the NFL. I've always wanted to listen to a hall of famer talk about his christmas decorations through an AirPods microphone over Zoom during the game

I was just thinking that, as a creative tool, drugs have a much better track record than AI. There are countless geniuses in a variety of fields who used mind altering substances to work their craft.

Yet I hear no one clamoring to help our students effectively do that...
Teachers need to know the tool
That’s what we are trying to do

And we are fighting for legal safeguards

I had a former student visit. She has, in the four years since I've seen her, completed two bachelor's degrees, transitioned, and developed an enthusiasm for the whole breadth of human experience that I find wonderfully endearing.

It's why we do this job.

I wouldn't trust an economist, period, after watching them for several decades.

But I'm also reminded of Feynman's rather flawed take on psychology. He just couldn't handle anything that wasn't as deterministic as physics.
Beware natural scientists doing social science

You wouldn't trust an economist doing physics or chemistry or astronomy. So don't trust the reverse
There is a growing problem of big name natural-science journals publishing social science that is "problematic".

This reflects a inability to accept the statistical standards and skills in social science are often much much higher than in many areas of the natural sciences.

(I'm a chemist btw).

Let people be their true selves, as they know and understand them. Let children explore their identities. Celebrate difference and variety and the incredible spectrum of humanity. The only alternative denies an opportunity to celebrate the joy of human flourishing and is ultimately unspeakably cruel

My shingles vax was nothing compared to my typhoid vax, and that was really mild compared to any actual illness I've had in the past five years.

Hell yeah I'm getting all the pokes.
I am baffled by this because I have had so many friends with shingles and NONE of them made it sound fun. Not one. A vaccine that made me absolutely miserable for 48 hours would still be a huge improvement over the mildest case of shingles I've heard of. (Also it made me tired for 1 day.)
All over my FB people talking about their bad experiences with shingles vax and dissuading each other from getting it! We need to give people real info on how to mitigate the symtoms caused by vaccines because vaccines are always better than meeting a virus unprepared. Yet drs aren't coaching ppl

Not only are we forced into "one size fits all" curricula, but then we are directed to differentiate our instruction.

It makes no sense.
I'm so sorry.

We are one of the only professions forced into "one size fits all" prescriptions driven by those who have never taught anyone how to read or write. It's frustrating.
