"But when the team looked at the employees’ actual work output, they found that the developers had completed tasks 20% slower when using AI than when working without it. Researchers were stunned. “No one expected that outcome. We didn’t even really consider a slowdown as a possibility.”

Ugh, yeah, I keep having those moments where I stop & realize I am not as "eh, ok I guess" as I think I am.
The whole Columbus mythos is just so *weird.* One of those stories where somebody just picked a name & date to talk up so they had a "beginning" they could identify.

Just a reminder: the Annapolis No Kings rally is on Sunday (so that it wouldn't conflict with Annapolis Pride, today). So DC area folks who want another chance to come out, there's a round two tomorrow.

"Average Congressman impeaches Trump 2.5 times a year" actually just statistic error. Impeachments Green, who impeaches trump 10 times a day, is an outlier and should be respected. He's been tilting at this Trump bullshit since day 1.

We really, REALLY need to be talking about this as an industry.

This is not normal. This is not sustainable.

There is so much talent out there underemployed and barely hanging on and just as much talent already in serious financial trouble.

I don't know how you fix it, but we HAVE to fix it.
There have always been GoFundMe things for artists going through serious health issues, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many art people literally begging for money as I have in the last few months. :/

short version: all jewelry & otherwise bead-related stuff is 50% off!

slightly longer version: what with one thing & another, we could use some extra money coming in. also I'm tired of looking at it. go buy pretty stuff!

In Maine, 4 hydroelectric dams are being sold to conservationists, paving the way for the largest river-restoration effort in US history. The deal could reopen hundreds of kilometres of spawning habitat for endangered Atlantic salmon and other migratory fish. buff.ly/caYUFYa

I've received an 'exclusive' invite to try Nature's new 'research assistant', which will burn down a forest to provide a 'summary of the paper' I'm reading and I have SUCH exciting news for them, that's called an 'abstract' and the actual authors already wrote it for me, no forest-burning required.

But also yep. My computer already does too many things I haven't asked for with a keyboard input, I don't even want to know what it's going to do with an extra layer of interpretation that has a tendency to hallucinate.
Nobody asked for this! We just wanted to be able to add images to Word docs without the formatting going haywire, have y’all fixed that yet?
This is the future of Windows. Microsoft wants to rewrite Windows to turn computers into AI PCs that you talk to. It's now bringing AI features to all Windows 11 PCs today, in a bid to convince you to talk to your PC and let AI control it. Full details 👇 www.theverge.com/news/799768/...

The thing that haunts me more than anything is how disconnected we are from nature today.

When Silent Spring came out, the suggestion that there could be no more birdsong was a clarion call. Now, I don't know if that same message would stick.
Your 'doom quote' for today:

"The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth super-highway on which we progress with great speed, but at the end lies disaster."

Me, yesterday, with a headache:
“Tomorrow!” cried Toad. “I will do it all tomorrow!”
I was mostly not on the front lines of dealing with my grandparents' stuff, but yeah...
People are a problem. 😣
Getting really tired of the suddenly increased helicopter flyover in the highway morass between BWI & the inner harbor. The first time or two were plausibly related to traffic accidents, but at several hours a day for the last week I get concerned...

Yes, you should be surprised and horrified by secret federal police running around our city kidnapping immigrants, crashing cars, launching chemical weapons and shooting and killing people. This is a thing you should be *perpetually* shocked by. We lose when we become numb to it.

Y'all covering famous people, and I'm sitting her obsessed with the nameless, voiceless people from our deep past
Y’all chasin’ trends and I’m sitting here obsessing over James Garfield.

When one side grabs kids off the street and thinks the courts are no barrier, the political thing is to go like hell for equal rights and equal protection and money in everyone's pocket. You debate the terms of art later.
