An independent bookshop for Barnsley, UK. Eclectic ranges of fiction and non-fiction for all ages.
If it is a title and/or author we aren't already aware of or considering, 2/3 copies ordered is enough for us to look at stocking it. We're always looking at extending ranges, options for people. Supporting authors by ordering is a very simple way you can support both their work and the publisher.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

A little later than planned, this was the first book sold today! An excellent large format new release by Peter McKinstry, Doctor Who, The Art of Time Travel.

Listened last night via Patreon, an excellent episode of @ohgodwhatnow.bsky.social, Cory Doctorow's book Enshittification available in store.

“Enshittification” is the word of the moment. It’s the reason Google is all ads and Amazon serves you crappy overpriced products. Cory Doctorow, who coined the term, joins @nndroid.bsky.social and @rafaelbehr.bsky.social to discuss how we can combat it ➡️ linktr.ee/ohgodwhatnowpod

First sales of the day! One a collected customer order, Finding Alfie by Michael Morpurgo. And one postal/delivery order. This is from a local writer Ronnie Steele, a collection of memories from a host of people on Kes and Ken Loach. Ordered by phone to be delivered to a local elderly relative.

It's a montage (montage!). By way of variety, the first four customers and books of the day, we have titles for all interests! The new James Islington hardback released, signed John Grisham. The Friendship Book and 'sister' annuals from the People's Friend are always popular.

Get up, put radio on, literally first words I hear are "England collapse". Aus lose three wickets. Go to work. Put radio on whilst opening to hear Aus go five down. Not a batting pitch then?!

Take Two... First book sale earlier today was A History of England in 25 Poems from @cathamclarke.bsky.social. Apt as I was looking at poetry earlier, getting ready to order more titles having made space on our shelves.

This is the version of the post that everyone needs to see. And all you readers/authors despairing of non-comprehension, etc, we are gaining new fans of fantasy and SF. It might not be the fantasy or SF you personally read, but they're reading and buying where they weren't before.
It hits different reading this whole thread.

Out today! Shame it wasn't on 18 November, the date that Tara finds herself 'stuck', her life (such as it is) goes on whilst all those around live the day as their first and only time. Though not quite all, as the review says book three has Tara finding she is not quite alone...

Good luck to Matt, @manvsbaby.bsky.social, Frank and Red has been a very popular book from our store, a genuine 'word of mouth' success with many readers recommending it to many others. So to our many US followers, seek it out!

‘Frank and Red’ is finally out in paperback in the US today!! 🇺🇸

First book of the day sold earlier - we have many orders from customers, mainstream and more special interest. Fortunately @penandswordbooks.bsky.social is local to us and they still had a few copies of this! So long as books are in print we will track them down...

We will start 'first book bought of the day!' posts again. As has quite often been the case in the past three weeks, first book bought today was @themillyjohnson.bsky.social! This photo was a new supply of signed copies the second time we ran out.

By chance today's was our 500th copy.

Maybe we should do a thread of reading-related injuries?! This was one of the books responsible. Apparently after walking a while if you sit reading for long enough, feet up on a chair in front of you, there is a risk of stretching your calf enough to hurt it. Hobbling day. Good book though!

It was good to attend the book launch for Calling Barnsley last night.

A project by @lungtheatre.bsky.social working with all aspects of the community, collecting stories about the lives and communities of our town. The book is a collection of monologues from these tales, in store soon!

Should anyone still need a reason not to use amazon.

"Authors can choose whether to preview or automatically publish completed translations." Because that'll work. Authors checking text in languages they don't know.
Amazon has launched a new AI-driven translation service, Kindle Translate, for Kindle Direct Publishing authors 👇 #BookSky

Day off today - have read most of @aptshadow.bsky.social Lives of Bitter Rain, listened to the end of a Wallander audiobook Sidetracked (personally bought from @libro.fm supporting our own store!), and made a start on the new issue of @privateeyenews.bsky.social. All is reading.

Read in public. Read in private. Read e-books, genre books, comics, fanfiction. Read literature. Read nonfiction. Read books you’ve already read. Listen to audiobooks. Read what you want. There’s no such thing as “doing reading the wrong way.”

Another recent book, For My Boys by Claire Throssell with @michellerawlins.bsky.social. We were pleased to support the book launch two weeks ago, and there is a further event planned at Barnsley Libraries in November. A difficult and emotional story, alongside a campaign to improve the law.
