At @savinglives.bsky.social, we've spent months planning World AIDS Day in Birmingham, UK. Tomorrow, @ftcbirmingham.bsky.social meets to plan the five years until the UN's 2030 goal of eliminating new infections.

Community awareness and policy success are linked. Abandoning WAD has material impact.
1/ ⚠️ Breaking: At CDC, we've been told the US Government will not officially commemorate World AIDS Day this year. No explanation given.

OMG I really loved what @dys-morphia.bsky.social had to say about Lessons in Magic and Disaster!

"I cannot recommend this book strongly enough if you like magic, academia, nested narratives, strangely satisfying family drama... and New England academia vibes."

I am reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, about 1/3 through, & I think I understand why there was a lot of commentary about it when it was released, now over a decade ago. I don't mind the over-explanation, and I like the inclusivity, and at this point, I'm invested.

Are you a book lover in Paris if you do not go to @shakespeareandcompany.com? I happily queued this weekend to get in. I came away with three books, all stamped. And I am very pleased with my selection and that I was able to have them stamped.

What I love about this time of year is everyone sharing their reading lists. And here is one for novellas.
I've put together a post about some of my favorite novellas of 2025!

We're nearing the end of SciFi Month—how did November fly by so fast?? So it's time to share my favorite science fiction books of the year so far. To be honest, I have not read a lot of SF this year, so this list includes some four star rated books (unusual for my Best Of lists). But I enjoyed all of these and recommend them!

I use my ALCS and PLR money to cover my annual Society of Authors subscription for a start.
Posting this partially as service to fellow writers, partly to motivate myself to get it done today. November 30 is deadline to log your year's work at @alcs.co.uk, in return for which you *will* get free money, possibly quite startling quantities of it. If you haven't signed up, do. www.alcs.co.uk

This is a really good thread, and it’s why I decided to go hybrid about 8 years ago. If you need a stable income from your writing, trad publishing on its own is heartbreakingly unreliable.

Sometimes it’s AMAZING. Sometimes it’s bleak. In a longterm career, you’ll see both extremes again & again.
I think one of the hardest things about being a career writer in traditional publishing is that writing attracts the neurodivergent brain while the variable reinforcement schedule punishes it. We are all the rat at the water bottle, waiting for the hit of cocaine. You get one win, and you need MORE.

One thing that continues to make me happy... the number of people in the signing lines, often teens, who say they got into reading or got back into reading because of my novel Annihilation.

Rachel Pollack (whom I was honoured to meet a couple of times) not only instilled in me the joy of divination (talking to the divine through tarot) but also created one of my favourite urban fantasy detectives in The Fissure King: A Novel in Five Stories.

I do think this is quite interesting, because it speaks to how certain models of supernatural creatures (fae, vampires, werewolves, whatever) have become canonical in certain genres and how these models are not that similar to the folklore they're based on.
It hits different reading this whole thread.
