Dispelling Fantasies made the BSFA longlist!!! I'm honored. Academics don't publish books to make lots of money, so being recognized by my fellow SFF lovers and having people tell me the book has been useful to them is the thing that keeps me going in my research!

Would love some more orders tbh, it's been dire this week in the miserable rain. I saw 5 people on Tuesday 🫠

Delirious is exactly how it often felt to be translating it - in the best possible way.
Usually you need a clear head while reading. But sometimes a little deliriousness adds to the experience.

@tobiascarroll.bsky.social reviews The Village at the Edge of Noon, by Darya Bobyleva!
Delirious Reading: The Pleasures of The Village at the Edge of Noon by Darya Bobyleva - Reactor

If anyone has read this, there was an ‘Oh my god’ moment in it that makes me think @cstross.bsky.social is playing with us like you would cats with a bit of string. I don’t think I’m going to last until the paperback of The Regicide Report.
1st 26 read: @cstross.bsky.social’s novella A Conventional Boy. The lore is loring, and I think I need to reread some other works from The Laundry in order to do a review justice. Even if you’re not acquainted with the series, it’s a brilliant tale of what happens when TTRPGs get a little too real.

It’s been over five years since Battle Ground. I’ll admit I didn’t finish it back then. I found the very long fight sequence exhausting. But the story hasn’t ended. Twelve Months is, I understand, a more reflective Dresden tale. And maybe the character, like the author, just needed time away.

NEWS! My next book, TRANSLUNAR, about a closeted trans woman who's an astronaut in the sixties, is coming out in fall 2027! It'll be on Wildthorn, Tor's brand-new general fiction imprint -- a dream, as it lets me work with @englelaird.bsky.social on my literary and historical fiction as well as SFF.

15 SFF books centring queer dudes coming out this year that I have my eye on. Feels like a bit of an uptick from last year, happily!

Just finished The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes, which was brilliant, but I'm interested that it joins The West Passage by Jared Pechaček as my favourite secondary world fantasy novels of the last couple of years and both are very definitely maximalist in terms of their fantastical nature.

I’m glad I went to with goal of low book completion but high page count as I can feel this is the year of the DNF. So far:

1 x DNF @ 20%
1 x DNF @ 50%
1 x DNG @ 4 pages

That last one was awful.

How many have you DNF’d so far?

I am very excited about Invisible Rainbows:

Astrophysicist and science communicator Dr Alfredo Carpineti reveals the extraordinary hidden universe beyond the limits of human vision and how we have learnt to harness it.

I feel massively privileged to get an early read of @drcarpineti.bsky.social's forthcoming book, INVISIBLE RAINBOWS. It is about a topic I am mildly obsessed with: all the types of light we cannot see, and it is told through the stories of incredible LGBTQIA+ scientists.✨🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🔆
