Have to say, the genre of music I dislike the most is when a composer takes an existing song and puts Christmas lyrics to it. Heard an atrocious Christmas rewrite of Nina Simone’s “Feelin’ Good” today

I haven’t spent as much time with Stoppard’s work as I should, but Enigma is one of my favorite movies and this is why: a clever film about clever people, it’s really about fighting and dying for the most meaningful things on earth (companionship, love of country, a future without fascism)
Stoppard always feels clever in a way that so so many writers mimic, but everyone else copies the surface. the Stoppard magic is that the cleverness is impossibly thin, basically transparent, and there’s this unending well of feeling on the other side

Here’s the thing about settling to keep the government grant $ flowing: this administration is actively trying to destroy state capacity to fund research at anything close to its current scale. If they’re successful, the entire model of the research university is dead.
Who is supporting these settlements? It’s generally not faculty or even long-time university administrators, it’s university boards and interim administrators who they’ve installed after admins with more of a fighting instinct have been forced out. There’s a playbook here.
@mbkplus.bsky.social and I will have more thoughts on the podcast, but it's no coincidence that the two most draconian settlements were signed by *interim* university presidents.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

In text messages to a convicted pedophile, Larry Summers referred to the Chinese woman he was sexually pursuing as “peril.” I’ll let y’all connect the dots on that slur. What a pile of hot, fetid shit this man is and has always been.

Okay, it is still open enrollment and i am still trying to convince you to go and sign up for health insurance. I know it is expensive and scary. But you can do it. The thread embedded here is a tutorial on how to understand and make that decision. I will now write a quickie version.
It's open enrollment time so here's a convenient peg to hang a little tutorial about how to choose your health insurance.

Most of the advice you get is bad. Most of your instincts are bad. I however used to work for a health insurance company and I do arithmetic for a living so I can help.
Personally I think it's great that my company's HR sends out an official looking tool where they even ask you to pre-populate your healthcare providers and instead of being the actual insurance enrollment process it's just some bullshit checklist to try and convince me I actually don't want a PPO

again a reminder that the NYT leadership supports Cuomo *because* of his record of sexual harassment, not *despite* it. they have a strong interest in making sure that they and their friends can never again suffer the indignity of being held accountable by their inferiors.

I'm white. I was almost as nervous as I was hungry the first time I stood in line. I'll never forget that gentle man's smile or his friendly "See you tomorrow". 😭

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net
