Hi, I’m an ND sci fi/fantasy writer working on my debut novel

I like to talk about books, games, history, and whatever’s interesting at the moment.

Also I’m learning Japanese, so これを読めばこんにちはを言ってくれませんか
Happy 25th birthday Wikipedia. You remain a bastion of the best parts of the internet

Starting Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett, it’s nice to see the absolute failures running Unseen University I’ve enjoyed in other books are finally in the Wizards books

I got to the big endgame reveals in Tales of Symphonia, and it has me thinking about how Star Wars is as core to the DNA of JRPGS as DnD. It’s not just Final Fantasy

The most interesting on this is probably my perspective antagonist Natalia. Her family is old money fallen from grace after her father’s bankruptcy. Thrust down the social ladder by her late father’s debts, she started work as a freelance assassin for the corporations while figuring out budgeting
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, tell me about your MC's (or another important character if you don't do MCs) role in society. Are they upper or lower class? What job/tasks do they do as part of this society? Are they even a member of a society?

Getting a bit into Blood Over Bright Haven, and I love how neurodivergent coded Sciona is. This is a fun book

For my current cyberpunk book, the biggest inspirations came from reading about Gnosticism, some existentialist philosophy, and the Yakuza games, though there’s definitely been some drift from there as I centered it more on entertainment culture
Good morning #JanuaryWorldbuilders! A very broad question that I have no doubt is difficult to answer: What was YOUR beginning of worldbuilding? What was your inspiration? Your initial spark? Another work of fiction? Boredom? A powerful imagination seeking an outlet?

I’m now starting Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang. I’ve heard good things about this one

I don’t think there’s anything that applies to everything I write, but everything I hate about Christian nationalism and capitalism do come up a lot
Everything that pisses me off about male wish fulfillment isekai.

So I’m reading The Hidden Girl and Other Stories by Ken Liu right now, and I really love the thematic through line between all these short stories. And that’s before I get to the ones that got adapted into Pantheon. I really love Ken Liu as an author. He’s consistently brilliant

The Jewel of the Milky Way dragged along the bottom of the asteroid, giving Jeremy the vague impression of truck nuts like the ones his great grandfather back in Indiana had, just one more tacky bit of detritus floating through a forgotten world.
Happy first Friday of the new year, friends!!

How about we kick off 2026 with another round of #notrealopeners? 😸

The rules are simple: let's share some practice opening lines to books that don't exist (...yet? 🤭)

I'll go first:

"A tattoo is only as good as the artist's ability to spell."

Happy new year. Hopefully I can write a lot more this year than last year

Well, Monstrous Regiment is definitely one of the best Discworld books I’ve read yet. Pyramids is fun so far, but not Monstrous Regiment good

Merry Christmas. I got peak Discworld this year

Started playing Tales of Symphonia. It is somewhat disorienting to hear Robin from Teen Titans going through this JRPG. I also notice a very similar setup to Final Fantasy X, but it’s interesting so far

For one I haven’t started…

After watching what they thought was the last ship off Earth, a mother and daughter travel across what remains of the climate apocalypse ravaged US on the rumor one last ship exists

I’m excited about the social commentary and relationship between the characters
Tell me about a WIP you haven’t started or just started drafting.

What’s the premise and what makes you excited about it?

Started Monstrous Regiment. It’s really nice to have Vimes back, even for just one book. I’ll be going through more standalones to break up the Wizards books. Waiting on Pyramids and Small Gods from the library

Eric was definitely the best Rincewind Discworld book so far. It was short. The setup for the standard Rincewind plot was more fun. The bit with the Aztecs was yikes, but there was also the actually really fun time in French existentialist hell

So those new raid fights in #FFXIV were really fun, and the music was great

We got a butt rock vampire, Blink-182 surfer bros, and Tom Morello writing the WOL’s wrestling intro theme

Also in the story, we fought another train, as you do, so that was fun

The Discworld’s coming fast recently, moving on to Eric. It’s more Rincewind, but at least it’s short. Next one will probably be Pyramids

So I just had a thought about the Discworld books on my shelf and how it’s actually fine they’re inconsistent editions and sizes, but really that with a series like Discworld, it’s actually better that way because it fits the vibes

I just heard someone call Expedition 33 the Neon Genesis Evangelion of JRPGs, and… wow that’s startlingly accurate and succinct
