i wouldn't say furry is "mainstream," but it is a more prominent subculture now that more of the larger public knows exists, similar to punk, hardcore, metal, etc.

and just like them, you'll have corporate grifters trying to sell the "scene aesthetic" to people

there's a term for that: "posers"
