Printing presses kept their letters in cases.

Capital letters went in the upper case.
Smaller letters went in the lower case.

This is why we say ‘UPPER CASE’ and ‘lower case.’

Ok, but what did we call them before the invention of the printing press?

Do bagel sandwiches count here? I'm usually looking for an everything bagel with bacon, egg, cheese, and avocado. If not a sammy then usually it's just Philly cream cheese that's available, but fancier cream cheeses like chives would be great. Asiago cheese bagels are also real clutch... 🥯

Fumbled these ceramic chopsticks & clearly broke a full 2 inches off the tip but there is no sign of the missing piece. Vanished, not even any shards around for clues
