I'm very much of the Sam Vimes school of thought towards law. There's nothing inherently noble about "the common people," but since they don't have money or power, the law should protect them from the rich & powerful. Because the law should be there to help balance things.

This. Whether making games, films, books, music, shows, or whatever other kind of art in potentia, you shouldn't try to "give people what they want." Do your idea, and hope you are giving people what they didn't know they wanted.
Cannot agree more with this. It's easy to lose what made a game, or any piece of art or media, special and resonant when you start leaning on what fans WANT.
99% of the time, fans don't know what they want, except for the thing they already have. That stifles creativity.
