My reminder that protected bike lanes significantly improve safety for EVERYONE on the road--including seniors. A DOT study found protected bike lanes reduce senior pedestrian deaths and serious injuries by 39% and total senior pedestrian injuries by 22%. www.nyc.gov/html/dot/dow...
Worth underscoring: DOT expects a level of undercounting at these sensors due to bikes missing them, sensitivity of sensors, or other interferences. All but one location included in the study had smaller levels of undercounting.

Cannot wait to see this work continue down to Grand Army Plaza next year with the block-long, concrete bus boarding islands, which will really make Flatbush feel much calmer and help pedestrians cross more easily.
We're a little shy of two months into the new Flatbush Ave center running bus lane fragment and it seems like drivers have largely gotten the message:

One cool thing about this bike lane is that it is reducing crossing distance on my corner and making it safer for me to cross Court Street, which I do approximately a million and one times every day.

As part of NYC DOT's quarterly Vision Zero update, we highlighted a few recent street redesigns that brought major safety gains. On Schermerhorn St, pedestrian injuries dropped 31% while bike ridership grew 30%. As we've seen all over, bike lanes make streets safer for pedestrians, too.

I’m not sure about this monstrosity but spaghetti pie—or frittata di Spaghetti—is real and a pretty common street food in southern Italy. My mom made it occasionally when I was a kid. It’s great for when you have lots of leftover pasta!

I’m not sure about this monstrosity but spaghetti pie—or frittata di Spaghetti—is real and a pretty common street food in southern Italy. My mom made it occasionally when I was a kid. It’s great for when you have lots of leftover pasta!

The 1st phase of the 31st Ave Bike Blvd in Astoria is complete and looks great. Sharing some photos as NYC DOT was nearly done. Dramatically more pedestrian space, much safer pedestrian crossings, and high-comfort cycling connecting to the waterfront and Manhattan. More: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

Today NYC DOT is beginning distributing certified, fire-safe e-bikes + batteries to delivery workers as part of our trade-in program. Workers are trading uncertified e-bikes and illegal mopeds in exchange. Here’s the bike for distribution & 1 of the mopeds being traded in.
