I think it’s fair to say that under any previous president a White House staffer who spoke about a NATO ally like this would have been hog tied and throw bodily out over the White House fence in propitiation of the ravening congressional committees marching down Pennsylvania Ave to investigate.

One of the foundational problems of our era is that we have broadly—in news media, in voter perceptions, in public discourse, etc—decided that Republicans have zero responsibility to the public, zero responsibility for their choices, & no agency as elected officials. Its destroying us.
This is a decent article that lays out the realities of trying to rein in ICE and DHS more broadly under an admin dedicated to letting them run wild, but framing it around the Democrats ability or not to do so, and practically ignoring the Republicans agency is so completely wild.

Simple thing: the states are subordinate but separate sovereign powers in the US constitutional system. They have robust powers to self-govern and resist criminal and unconstitutional infringement from a corrupt, renegade federal executive. Tell the Feds to bring it.

Pollster: 58% of Americans say Trump's second term has been a failure. A year into term number two, Trump's numbers look worse than any other president. Trump is even worse than George W. Bush after Katrina and a long period in the Iraq War. This is really, really bad.
