I think people conflate segregated spaces with isolated ones. People in segregated spaces must leave them to access goods and services, wealthy people who exclude others from their communities do not.

You mean rich white families will seclude themselves from other people?

Reminds me of conversations with @louiseseamster.bsky.social about ‘snob zones’ (& the book: www.beacon.org/Snob-Zones-P...) & the construction of social isolation for status that also perpetuates racial & SES inequalities

My wife was sexually harassed by Miles Hewstone as a phd student. He was still asked to review her (and other women he harassed) for jobs and promotions. This is so fucked up.

Thankfully, she and many other women testified against him and something was finally done. This is her take on his case:

I’ve spent a lot of the last three years investigating the rise of anti-trans politics. Often, it came back to the controversy over trans women athletes.

So I teamed up with @pablo.show to look into the leading figure on the issue: Riley Gaines.

How right-wing superstar Riley Gaines built an anti-trans empire
The swimmer tied a trans woman for fifth. The MAGA industrial complex took care of the rest.

Reclassification targeting what are largely female-dominated fields
The DoE has reclassified numerous health professional and other degrees, limiting access to federal student loan programs eligible for the higher OBBBA loan caps from thousands to a few hundred.

As ALWAYS, this is about $$.

We're about to become REALLY "great"...

a) these changes illustrate how the “smartness” in what’s framed as an individual smart or dumb choice (your major/grad degree) is determined by structural factors in how they’re rewarded, not their intrinsic value
b) the illustration’s especially stark when those structural factors change overnight

The possible impact of ‘negative outlooks’ & downgraded ratings can also mean institutions who might seek large loans to try & weather the political storm because of funding shortages of different kinds may get less or get them at all as banks see the sector as higher risk than in the past.
Higher education outlook remains negative for 2026, Moody’s says
Enrollment, political and cost pressures abound and will stick around in the new year, analysts said in a recent report.
