Plucky journalist. Email me: [email protected]. Working on a book proposal. Portfolio: soniaweiser.wordpress.com

Open for commissions and kind words. Seriously. Hire me.
for an upcoming demo I'm doing for the Interviews with Non-Evil People series with a professional storytelling coach about how to turn an article into a "story" for social media content, I need someone to send me an article that they wrote that is very dull and kind of lengthy.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

I happen to be very good at organizing campaigns and initiatives and such. If you have a good idea for how journalists (and their fans) can support each other right now but don't know how to go about executing it, email me at [email protected] and we can brainstorm together.

I urge every newsroom and company that requires people come into the office think long and hard right now about just how exclusionary your policy is and whose life you could improve just by offering them work where they're at. Hire based on talent, not location.

It sucks that the default for helping laid off journalists has become making fundraisers because none of us have the hiring power or assigning capacity or the jobs for that matter to do anything else.

I *love* freelancing. I have done the best work of my career as a freelancer. But the idea that several hundred new freelancers, newsletter writers, and worker-owned co-ops is remotely feasible, much less a replacement for The Washington Fucking Post, is insane.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

not to mention that when you're freelance, many sources trust you less so the "good" stories can't come to fruition, partially because you don't have the time/money to embed yourself in the community, and partially because we've equated legacy publications with accuracy and legitimacy for too long.
I think the #1 thing people who aren't freelance reporters don't understand about freelance reporting is how laughably bad the pay rate/hours worked is – you can pitch many publications and get published, make a few hundred bucks.

But to earn a living wage requires hours that do not exist in a day.

In the past week we've learned ICE has secured property to build human warehouses in Merrimack, NH and Williamsport, MD. Just some facts I think bear repeating.

journalists are workers who deserve to be paid fairly for our labor and I think that far too few consumers of media recognize or even care about this fact

When I resigned as co-chair of the National Association of Black Journalists convention after their decision to platform Trump, I took a lot of heat for it.

I was told “Black journalists are going to expose his racism and save America”

Today, the Trump regime is arresting Black journalists.

The origin story of our current moment in American fascism is the creation of white fraternities—which exempted a piece of campus from race and gender integration and allowed the most powerful students to bond over their hateful ideologies and group violence.

This dude studies bad decisions FOR A LIVING. Like he writes books on why people make bad decisions. Write what you know, I guess.
Here’s Duke behavioral economist Dan Ariely asking Jeffrey Epstein for “the name and email of the redhead that was here with you.” This is four years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.

Marimar Martinez is a hero.

She was shot 5 times by ICE.

The agent told her to “do something b*tch” before opening fire.

He later bragged “5 shots, 7 holes”.

DHS tried to smear her reputation but video footage vindicated her.

Next week she will testify in Washington about ICE’s brutality.
