Also #EdTravCyc there was a big icy puddle at the bottom of the slope from the Restalrig Path down to Leith Links, though this has perhaps thawed by now.

Somewhere in an alternative present, steam-extracted coffee was never invented and we still have to make do with a polystyrene cup of filter coffee of an unspecified origin from a simple glass BRAVILOR BONAMAT jug, where you could only hope that it was poured from the fresh jug at the bottom.

Age verification?

I remember when 20p pieces were launched, before pound coins, when the 5p/10p/50p were still big and when halfpenny pieces were still in circulation, with the manually-applied price stickers on goods in shops still sometimes specifying half-pence prices.
Age verification?

I remember when oven chips were a new product and crisps had so much salt on them, eating just one packet gave you elevated blood pressure.

My parents dial phone had it's own table and a lock, with a key, telephone numbers came from a book or my head! 🤯

Some important clarification here from @cyclinguk.bsky.social on submitting close-pass video evidence to the police

www.cyclinguk.org/blog/it-wort...
Is it worth submitting video footage of close passes?
After concerns that police in Wales might not be accepting video submissions of close passing, we met with the Head of GoSafe in Wales to find out more. Here’s what he told us, along with his advice f...

CRATER WARNING on Seafield Road eastbound between the level crossing and Seafield Street. Recently significantly worsened in the cold weather and by heavy traffic turning left out of Marine Esplanade. Reported to @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social under 102000111365. #EdTravCyc

Where the road priorities change, I hope there'll be speed bumps/raised tables/rumble-paint. I hope the turns on (particularly two-way) cycle channels will be a bit wider. I hope it'll be useful/easy/findable enough to have been worth doing to avoid a couple of narrow paths under bridges.

As for the New Bit, offering an alternative for a bit of the canal, I hope it has plenty of repeater signs on lampposts so that it's easy to follow. The canal is one of the nice thick purple lines on the @spokes.org.uk map - signifying freedom from junction choices and pestering by motor vehicles.
January 10, 2026 at 4:37 PM
From Fountain Park direction to the canal is a two-step pain (or get off and walk). Canal to eastbound to Semple St likewise. Lochrin Square looks to have been entirely ignored as a thoroughfare. Also, tweak either the taxi rand or bus stop so that they're not quite so likely to gum things up.
January 10, 2026 at 4:16 PM
It looks a bit like someone had heard of cycle-priority roundabouts, but then applied it to the wrong sort of junction which isn't a roundabout and on which they clearly prioritise cars. It's removed the desire-line pedestrian crossing from outside Loudon's to the more easterly canal access point.
January 10, 2026 at 4:16 PM
Maybe this section of the plans was only drawn since the Port Hamilton cut-through has been out of action. As @blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk pointed out in their guide, this absolutely does not cater for two-way traffic to/from the canal. It's also missing advanced stop boxes on all three arms.

I would be fascinated to know if bits like this went past any cyclists before being committed to PDF. I would urge whoever drew it to borrow a long-wheelbase cargo bike, or a trike, or fit a child seat or pair of panniers and then visit the west end of Rankeillor St, or the mouth of Hermit's Croft.

I saw a mini-gritter-tractor heading east from Ainslie Park at about 17:10, which might have done a bit of Five Ways.
