And my point about tape delay is nobody cared enough about the NBA to preempt like Rockford Files or whatever. I have to think that betting on the Lakers/Celtics type rivalries in the 80s was a huge part of the growth. I don’t discount that the game grew and became more fun to watch tho either

Because historically it was the last game of the week for gamblers to get right or top off a great weekend. Fantasy Football blew the NFL up into the behemoth it is now. Thats gambling. Billions of dollars were bet before Draft Kings.

I have a hard time with the “gambling will ruin sports” take. It may for sure. Probably will in fact. But it leaves out that a big part of why sports, but particularly the NBA and NFL, are so big is because of gambling. In my lifetime, NBA finals were on tape delay. Monday night football is huge…
