On my third listen, I'm not sure which is more stunning: How methodical Page was in building his career and then his band, or the second? biggest band ever came out of merging the Yardbirds' "rave up" style with Bert Jansch and then stealing a bunch of songs.

Of course, there is absolutely no such thing as a best lyricist for myriad reasons, not least because what qualifies as a "good lyric" depends very much on the whole song.

A big takeaway from @500songspodcast.bsky.social is that bands could actually live off of music before they were famous. To have the chance to spend a few years trying to make it, even on little money would be amazing. But it's not an option anymore. Make you wonder what we've lost in music.

Yeah, you really got me now…

Today we’re travelling back in time to Episode 119: “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks, and the song that teleported distorted guitar to number one.

Available to listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and via Andrew’s website: 500songs.com/podcast/epis...

I particularly enjoyed the line about how Plant wrote on Led Zeppelin II "about his wife, about his conflicted feelings for his sister-in-law, and about hobbits, sometimes all in the same song."

I knew Jimmy Page "borrowed" quite heavily from the blues, but I had no idea he considered anything he heard, no matter what style it was, as fair game. In unrelated news, I just discovered a great new podcast called The 500 Songs of Rock Music History hosted by Jimmy Page.

I loved Zeppelin's music in high school and college, and it's so refreshing to hear a measured, music-first take on them as (deeply, deeply flawed) human beings. Other biographers tend to treat them as idols or utter villains. If you haven't heard A History Of Rock Music In 500 Songs, you should.
