The University: We need to become leaders in climate and sustainability and there is an urgent need to develop climate science courses.

Me: Our department has climate in the name and we already offer courses on climate science at every level.

The University: Who invited you to this meeting?

It could, but the article was specifically about coal and subsidies to the coal industry. There are ways to make mining less damaging but there so far is not a way to stop coal from releasing CO2.

This is so true! I have been involved in several committees where we get a handful of applications so PLEASE nominate yourselves or better yet nominate a deserving colleague.

PLEASE NOMINATE YOURSELF FOR ACADEMIC AWARDS.

And ask friends to nominate you. And apply again next year if you don't get it.

I've been on a handful of committees that can give people things. A frequent complaint is that we can't give great people recognition if we don't "see" them in the pool.

When I was a younger faculty, I kept wavering on whether I should apply for the Rising Star every year. And then when I finally worked up the courage to apply, I was no longer eligible. Lesson here is that you should not miss your shot and just apply! Don’t pray for someone to secretly nominate you!

Short-term initiatives to rescue industries with no long-range planning are only going to delay the inevitable end when some future government decides that they are spending too much $$ propping up that community. end/

slowed their transition to renewable (and cheaper) sources of electricity. This story is also not an unfamiliar one to anyone who grew up in a place with a resource based economy. But it should be a lesson that government intervention is never a permanent solution. 5/

of the coal business. The effects on those communities who depended on mining were devastating. Many of those who lost their jobs coal mining went on to find work in the oil sands our west. NS power was then left with a bunch of legacy coal generating plants that they need to maintain which has 4/

In the 1980s as cheaper and cleaner sources of coal from western Canada and the US were found NS coal started to suffer but NS power continued to purchase local coal to support the industry. This was coupled with the fallout from the Westray disaster in 1992 and by 2001 the government was out 3/

This led to coal naturally being used early on for electricity generation. NS started to move away from coal for electricity but then the 1970's oil crisis caused the province to reinvest in local coal with the government stepping in forming DEVCO to boost local coal as a domestic alternative. 2/

This reminds me of something my home province of Nova Scotia did that still has lasting repercussions. Nova Scotia has a long history of coal mining. 1/

Timmins, Ont., has a sordid history with mining, from boom to bust, and the scars left behind. With a massive nickel mine set to open nearby, many want the jobs and benefits, but also a more cautious approach to critical minerals. @leahbortskuperman.bsky.social reports: thenarwhal.ca/critical-min...

I learned a new word this weekend:

Congratudolences!

It’s what you say when someone wins a something that is arguably an honor… but will also lead to more work. Like the winner of the pie eating contest & the prize is more pie.

Or being elected department chair.

Hi! I’m the new CUNY Astro chair!

For our #flowcytometry peeps, would you like to have a single fix/perm protocol that is optimised for everything? One that preserves fluorophores while allowing simultaneous TF and cytokine staining? How about 100-fold cheaper?

You got it:

It was great to chat with @emilypont.bsky.social @heatmap.news about my book EXTRACTION. We discussed why mining is so conflictual, the power relations of extractive frontiers, how organized communities fare better & why we should use the public sector to proactively plan + govern. Link ⬇️
