I’m traveling soon, need to remind myself to not automatically get in the Starbucks queue
Friendly reminder that striking workers are asking you not to patronize ANY Starbucks store.

If you're traveling this week, your airport definitely has other options. Zero reason to even think about crossing a picket line!

This is amazing
Did I ever share this from our NYC atlas with you? "What Is a Jew? From Emma Goldman to Goldman Sachs," a map whose specificities breaks down the idea of a homogenous population so useful to antisemitism. Ruth Bader Ginsberg to Bernie Madoff to Rose Schneiderman to the Beastie Boys.

I started using the phrase “crazytown bananapants” probably around 2012 or so
I feel like an earlier form was crazypants and then shifted to bananapants as crazy underwent taboo replacement in the last decade or two, but someone could do a corpus study. I don't think it's particularly internetty, it's readily pronounceable and I recall people using it out loud early on

A question for everyone's favorite neighborhood internet linguist @gretchenmcc.bsky.social -- do you have an intel on -pants as a suffix, like "bananapants" or (just spotted in an excellent speech by @charliejane.bsky.social ) "bizarropants"?

So I was invited to accept an award for "imagination in service to society." This forced me to think a bit about what "imagination," "service" and "society" mean to me.

Here's the speech I delivered last night:

There actually has not been enough reflection in the tech community about DOGE

I'm really glad this person made this change to the chart. I want to also point out something in the original report, here: www.epi.org/publication/... It says "Our focus on 2019 and 2023 allows us to largely ignore the dramatic swings in employment and wages in 2020 and

Just dropping a little Stuart Hall casually, like demurely showing your poker hand and it’s a full house
In my article, I quoted something from Stuart Hall's "Culture, Community, Nation," an essay first published in a 1993 issue of Cultural Studies. He writes:

"It should not be necessary to look, walk, feel, think, speak exactly like a paid-up member of the buttoned-up, stiff-upper-lipped, ...
