"We live in a time of intensely competing sexual discourses, and sexuality is one of the arenas for struggle against oppression and injustice. There is really no way to be apolitical as a sexologist – every action supports some interests and opposes others." -- Leonore Tiefer

(2/2) Yeah, no. You cannot advocate for women's equality and the betterment of their lives if you exclude ENTIRE GROUPS OF PEOPLE. Patriarchy does much the same. And if patriarchy does this, then how are you "fighting" it? Short answer: you're not. Don't be the patriarchy's puppet.

(1/2) Something important needs to be reiterated for #WomensHistoryMonth (Canada): trans women are women. Sex workers are women. Trans sex workers are women. Much (primarily cis and white) feminist thought excludes sex workers and trans women/femme persons from its movement.

These Supreme Court oral arguments on conversion therapy are going to be painful. No matter what is said, know that trying to force someone to be what they're not is psychological torture with measurable negative consequences, and anyone trying to defend such efforts is a bigoted monster.

As a person who twice barely avoided getting kidnapped and sent to conversion therapy by my own family members it is very disheartening to hear that conversion therapy is still being discussed. Last i checked the only thing it converts is living kids to dead ones.

"Chronic pain is thus cast as a personal failure; if a chronically pained person continues to be in pain, it is because they have not tried hard enough—they have failed to control their pain and failed to control their bodymind."

i've lived with ME/CFS for 25+ years. i'm Australian, but the UK's invalidation and gaslighting of people with ME/CFS - cf. the thread on the below post - nevertheless affect me because the Australian government puts stock in things like the well-discredited UK PACE study.

ME/CFS is a devastating condition that has long been denied, dismissed, psychologised and underdiagnosed. Research is at last starting to catch up with it, with glimmers of hope for those who have been left untreated for so long.
There's a huge BUT coming ...🧵

Research could offer hope for ME patients – but some experts urge caution and say more studies needed

etc. etc., that should be addressed in order to reduce costs, well before further burdening participants and their carers/families in ways that might well _increase_ costs to the system in the long(er) run. /3
alexisx-au.bsky.social
there are many inefficiencies in the system, such as the absurd rules described by the below article, and shonky providers, and SCs who _create_ work for participants and carers (we lost several months to one), and the NDIA itself making decisions that are eventually overturned by the AAT, /2
alexisx-au.bsky.social
My experience is that this sort of absurdity is .... not uncommon.
"She recently applied for approval to spend her [NDIS] funds on a $2,600 Thermomix ... but was rejected.
"Instead, she was told by the [NDIA] she could spend $10,500 on a support worker to cook for her."

'I was so cross': NDIS participants blast 'nonsensical' spending rules
A year after a controversial NDIS change, advocates are growing increasingly concerned that "counterintuitive" and "nonsensical" funding decisions are reducing participant independence.

🙂 My position is basically: Setting aside the fact that NDIS could be covered by things like not subsidising the US naval industry, and by making corporations actually pay an appropriate amount of tax, and by not giving fossil fuels to corporations for free, /1
alexisx-au.bsky.social
👍 Both of my partners are on the NDIS, and i'm a Plan Nominee for one of them. i very much agree with what you're saying about the lack of focus on shonky providers; it's something i regularly post about (cf. e.g. below).
alexisx-au.bsky.social
If only the government was as willing to resource the auditing and blocking of shonky NDIS providers bleeding the system as it is to resource denial of important/critical supports for NDIS participants - which creates extra costs in other healthcare systems.

alexisx-au.bsky.social
NDIS participants often have to go through an exhausting and dehumanising process to prove that a disability is permanent. But then the NDIA wants people to keep 'proving' that the disability is still disabling. Which is surely an effective use of consolidated revenue. 😛
#auspol #ndis #disability
alexisx-au.bsky.social
The NDIA treats supporting documentation from health professionals such as GPs and specialists and long-time support workers as untrustworthy compared to an OT report. But now we're seeing even OT reports disregarded. Because NDIA assessors are apparently omniscient.
#auspol #disability #ndis
alexisx-au.bsky.social
And yes, i know disabled people - people with 'psychosocial disability' - who would absolutely be at risk of being traumatised, or re-traumatised, by having to let a stranger into their safe space, and so anxious as a result that the 'assessment' gets severely distorted.
#auspol #disability #ndis
alexisx-au.bsky.social
Dynamic disabilities are often unpredictable, and can be made worse - sometimes significantly so - by people expecting those with such disabilities - such as myself - to "just push through" on a bad day, as though a relatively good day shows one's 'real' capacity.
#auspol #ndis #disability
alexisx-au.bsky.social
Yet another problem with the idea of a 1-3 hour 'assessment' in an NDIS participant's home is that it doesn't acknowledge the existence of dynamic disabilities i.e. disabilities where one can have (relatively) "good days" (or hours) and "bad days" and "nonfunctional days".

This won’t end well. As soon as there’s government money on offer, private corporations come out to dip their snouts in the trough. We’ve seen it in aged care, childcare, disability providers, employment services, etc, but continue to fail to learn the lessons from these examples.
alexisx-au.bsky.social
It makes me so angry that radfem / 'gender critical' people assert that gender-affirming care is a form of conversion therapy. No, conversion therapy is an attempt to force someone to be other than who they know they are. Including autistics required to be 'neurotypical-presenting'.

As someone who was subjected to conversion therapy, it doesn’t work. It won’t work. It’s torture. I was hooked up to an IV and made to vomit watching gay porn for two hours per week. I was prayed over. Bibles and the Book of Mormon were shoved in my face.

By criminalizing sex work, authorities claimed they were “rescuing” women, when in reality they were expanding police power and reinforcing racial and gender hierarchies. This framing has endured, recycled in modern anti-trafficking campaigns, zoning ordinances, and “end demand” policies.

Come on now; did anyone who hasn't had a lobotomy REALLY believe cop claims they stalked a woman "for her own good"?

If so, please reply to this so I can provide information on how to send me $40,000 so I can say a special prayer that will keep you "safe" from "Antifa".
