the basic issue is that the united states don't have political parties, we really operate with "extended party networks" of party committees, candidate committees, and affilated PACs that don't necessarily have any legal/formal ties holding them together

I do not understand why this "France just sat behind the Maginot Line" argument is a thing! The problem was very much the opposite, with the best of the French army advancing into Belgium and thus not available to block the German advance through the Ardennes.
