Every Democrat running for office needs to promise investigations and full prosecutions from top to bottom, remove its funding bloat then break up the agency and distribute its core remaining useful functions across other agencies.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

I have described the experience of the last year - watching my spouse and colleagues and friends have their careers and our lives upended - as like being beaten to death with a rubber chicken.

It's absurd the whole time, but I'm still dying over here.

It’s not over but when it is I will never, ever forget the “serious people” who buckled and compromised and abetted the torture and crime and murder for a fascist lottery ticket.
I think the core point is that trump had a honeymoon in which capital/media/political opposition all decided he was the one true voice of america. he did a lot of horrible things with that (including murdering 100s of thousands), but didn't consolidate power...

this thread is a delight

(poppy bagel with scallion cream cheese, which unfortunately makes me look like a poser, but at four years older than Mamdani and not a new yorker, I have probably been doing it as long as him.)
Tell me your bagel order and I will tell you *based on NYC cultural expectations* if you have won or lost your election for political office in NYC.
One of my favorite things about NYC is whenever anyone runs for office here they are required to disclose their bagel order.

extremely not excited about how I have spent a lot of time refining a research question about US civ-mil relations, especially with regard to the Guard, in hope of making it a PhD application, just in time for real world testing.

I think it's good to keep getting mad about evil and unjust things, if only to remind yourself and everyone else that these things are in fact evil and unjust. I don't think it's naive. Nor is it wise and sophisticated to adopt a "You fool, nothing matters and nothing good can ever happen" posture

Every year Gallup releases their public approval of American institutions numbers I send a variation on the same essay to my colleagues on civilian approval and oversight of the military, along with some nice, clear analysis about civilian approval and budgets for personnel programs and VA.

Greenwich Mode Time is that all times occur at the same frequency, except for a 2pm meeting on a Tuesday afternoon, which occurs more frequently because it lasts a hundred years.
OK, people have brought up "Greenwich Median time" an "Greenwich Mode Time" but because this is a super smooth distribution, Greenwich Median Time would be (I think) exactly the same as Greenwich Mean Time and because times are not absolute values, Greenwich Mode Time cannot exist.

having just concluded a week in the UK where I kept my mouth shut unless I absolutely had to, on account of being painfully aware of being American right now... yeah.

(and yeah, I'm aware how much we smile, but like. I simply have not been able to unprogram the socialization to do it)
Many Americans who travel abroad try so hard not to be ugly Americans that they kinda make it weird
always found it funny that the whole "ugly american" thing has been around long enough that a lot (most?) tourists now overcompensate for it, so the actual american stereotype now is more like "unsettlingly nice"
