I'm sure there are other places in where "cheese bagel" means this pastry, I just haven't been to one yet so idk! And tbf plenty of people *within* Montreal aren't familiar with these pastries. They used to be everywhere when I was a kid but not so much anymore.

No, bagel is commonly used to mean those savoury round bread products that go with cream cheese. 😃 The kosher cheese bagel is a fairly distinct/unique thing and I always have to explain to people outside Montreal that by "cheese bagel" I don't mean "regular bagel with cheese baked on top of it".

Something I love and always miss about Montreal is how many people in dense housing areas like this one enjoy making their little space their own—nonseasonal decorations and tended gardens abound. Making these spaces homes rather than just lodgings. It brings joy to me just passing by too.

My friend said that the skeleton in the garden looks like it's asking for uppies, and as far as I'm concerned this is canon.

One of my lifelong favourite foods I always miss because I just can't find them in other Canadian cities that I've lived in, are these kosher cheese bagels: horseshoe-shaped logs of lightly sweetened cheese similar to a farmers cheese or quark, surrounded by soft but flaky lightly sweetened pastry.
