I don't really understand most fouls in American football. Like, how is that grabbing allowed and that other one not? Occasional blatant Jersey or helmet, sure. But isn't much of the game grabbing and blocking the other guy?

Foreign Policy Analysis is low key the darkly funniest field ever now. Are we at war? Does the president himself know? Who are we at war with? Why? Something to do with drugs and/or oil? We’re either invading Venezuela, Nigeria, neither, or both.
Either Trump believes the US struck a Venezuelan facility on Christmas Eve because he was told that erroneously, or he's conflating different stories, or we actually did what he claims. Regardless of explanation, we need that information.

I've been in Texas for a couple weeks and their constant claims of freedom etc feel very hollow.
Earlier, from @francescadnunz.bsky.social: “If I’m in my backyard, if I’m on my deck, do I expect that I have to encounter a law enforcement camera? I shouldn’t have to, Should I have to deal with a cop zipping by all of the time? I don’t think so.”

The Department of Public Safety has acquired an army of unmanned aerial vehicles—nearly as large as the U.S. Border Patrol's.

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

Just corruption all over the place.
GOP operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, convicted election fraudsters, were paid $960,000 in the second quarter to secure a pardon for a former nursing-home operator who defrauded the government of $38 million. Trump pardoned the man, Joseph Schwartz, last month.
Inside the New Fast Track to a Presidential Pardon
Even some of the president’s closest advisers have been surprised by a number of the recent series of pardons.

People are harshing on some “diverse reading challenge” thing that’s going around, and I get it, but looking at what you read and asking yourself “what isn’t represented here?” is imo a good and healthy practice

According to the Lancet, vibrio infections have broken records the last three years in a row. They also degrade ecosystems & cause mass die-offs, including commercial marine species & coral reefs.

Experts say the cost of Vibrio is already in the billions & expected to increase with climate change.
Marine heat waves, intensified by climate change and pollution, are driving the spread of Vibrio bacteria worldwide — pathogens that can cause severe illness, including cholera and “flesh-eating” infections.
Marine heat waves and raw sewage combine to put human health at risk
Earlier this year, a spate of deaths in Florida caused by Vibrio vulnificus, known as the flesh-eating bacteria, made headlines. Infections of this kind are troublingly on the rise as ocean…

We read to know we are not alone, as the saying goes.

We use LLMs to forget we have been abandoned.

Anything that can be done by a book can be done better by an LLM if you dont know the difference between knowing and forgetting.

The story is insane. The acting head of cyber security, a Noem crony, repeatedly demanded to see highly classified information he didn’t need access to, and when staff set up a lie detector test as a condition to grant him access, he failed it. So DHS suspended the staffers.

Now this is a role model
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Mike Johnson sent Congress home until January 5 without extending the ACA premium tax credits.

That means millions are about to see their health insurance costs spike overnight.

No vote. No fix. No excuse.

When your premiums skyrocket, remember who walked away.
