I don’t want to scare writers into second-guessing what a hook is, or if their story has one. You can captivate a reader with character or language just as much as you can with plot. Your story doesn’t need to be frontloaded with loud explosions, but it does need to grab hold and not let go.
it does make me worried that my stuff will never be captivating enough, when i think it's the bigger-picture story that is my strength
