You’ve gotta be kidding me.

This WaPo editorial presents a misleading revisionist history of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s criminal cases against Trump.

Then it has the gall to compare that to Trump’s overt targeting of his perceived enemies.

Really embarrassing stuff.

But the mere fact that a legal tool might be available does not mean it should be used. The
current rage over Grassley's revelation shows why. Smith showed little restraint in his pursuit of a former president. He charged Trump for official acts he took as president. He sought a gag order to limit Trump's ability to criticize the prosecution. He tried to accelerate the case to try a leading presidential candidate before the 2024 election.

One of the (many) legal gaps that needs to be filled after this nightmare is over is to prohibit federal law enforcement agencies from using federal funds to create propaganda videos with anyone in custody. This is all about spectacle and content creation, remove the incentive and the means

Al Jazeera reports that Israeli warplanes struck Gaza City at the same time Trump announced a ceasefire deal. Palestinians had been celebrating the truce, but raids continued. No casualties have yet been confirmed.

Israel has also been blowing up about 300 homes a day using explosive-laden APCs.

If you type all the things you want into any word processing document, the software will even number them for you, so they’re easy to keep track of. Then you can cross them off as your opponents capitulate on each one, which is very satisfying.

If Trump is going to be “exempt,” I think the order should say that if the feds want to use force against peaceful protesters, Trump has to go to Broadview and pepper spray them himself, personally. 😂

Ellis rules that the plaintiffs have standing for their case. She cites the "ongoing and sustained record of conduct" by federal agents gathered over the last month.

She further finds the plaintiffs have plausibly shown feds have "frustrated" efforts to "protect journalist safety."

The popularity of “John Brown’s Body” among Union soldiers was a testament not merely to Brown’s rehabilitation but to his canonization. Like the Biblical prophets whose imprecations he echoed, Brown had little honor in a country which he believed to have invited divine judgment for its sins. But his words, deeds, and death were sanctified when the war came. In 1857, Illinois Senate candidate Lincoln pronounced Brown a fanatic, insisting that “not bloody bullets, but peaceful ballots only, are necessary” to achieve abolition. In 1861, President Lincoln, still hoping to avoid war, was reported as saying that “emancipation would be equivalent to a John Brown raid, on a gigantic scale.” In 1863, Abe the Emancipator commanded thousands of troops—including former slaves—who marched to kill enslavers and liberate their captives, singing of a “terrible swift sword” not unlike the one which Brown wielded at Harpers Ferry. It was fitting, then, that at Cooper Union—the site of Lincoln’s most extended denunciation of Brown’s actions—Frederick Douglass recruited Black troops for Lincoln’s army by promising that “[e]very honest soldier who marches into Virginia goes there to carry out the object that led JOHN BROWN to Harpers Ferry.” Reluctantly but ineluctably, Lincoln proved Brown right.

It also betrays a fundamentally white-centric view of things. The proper analog to what is happening now isn’t Watergate, Iran-Contra, or Iraq. It’s Jim Crow, the Redeemers, and the Klan.

That *those* aren’t the examples they’re reaching for is deeply, deeply telling.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.

(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
