As an indie-bookstore-operating person: can confirm.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Absolutely correct. The references to Neville Chamberlain show that people have only a vague understanding of who Chamberlain was. For starters, he was not also a fascist.

'Pressure on Russia needs to shift....from linear incremental changes to a campaign of pressures that generate mass, velocity, and cascading effects.'

100%. Western strategy towards Russia is fragmented and fundamentally reactive. We have so many strengths and refuse to use them effectively.
As ISW's Nataliya Bugayova writes, NATO is both behind the curve of the Russian threat and also underutilizing the opportunity to contest Russian initiative at a relatively low risk and cost compared with the challenge it will face when the rate of the Russian attacks can grow exponentially (1/5)

Took this yesterday evening. I miss the Ohio sky when I'm not here, and I miss the New Mexico sky the rest of the time. I spend a lot of time looking up, I guess.

Man, I dunno. This sounds an awful lot like what I'd say if I just found out I was hemorrhaging support in the Senate.

Well... *I* wouldn't say it. I'm not the one hemorrhaging support in the Senate.
Republican Senator Mike Rounds said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a call to senators, confirmed the so-called 28-point “peace plan” was actually a Russian wishlist and is “not the administration’s position”. Nor is there any threat to cut off weapons or intelligence to Ukraine.

Science ≠ religion. There is no such thing as "Orthodox" science.

There is truth, and there are lies.

"Vaccines cause autism" is a lie.
He's not challenging "orthodoxy", he's ignoring data. Stop dancing around his disinformation campaign and call it what it is -- an all out attack on Science and America's place in the scientific world.

I hate that agreeing with this take - and perhaps that EU countries could have been maintaining/improving their armed forces all along - puts me on the same side as some of the worst people. But it's true, and not *only* because our current government is rotten and corrupt.
Completely agree.
The fates of Ukraine and Europe are linked.
European security system will be destroyed without Ukraine.

Ew. What the hell? Why is it so hard for people in this administration to stop obsessing over how other people look in public? This is creepy.

This is probably bad to admit, but I'm a little excited at the nod to the Battle of Lake Erie

Everybody hates the EPA until they remember the standard Cleveland joke. It's too bad we have a GOP Rep. who has totally abdicated his responsibilities, or I'd imagine he might have something to say about his previous efforts to keep Lake Erie clean, at least?

Naaaah. Easier to be a silent coward.
Repeatedly! When I was researching for my article on Trump and the Supreme Court's latest threat to the Clean Water Act, I learned the Cuyahoga River caught on fire not once, not twice, but over a dozen times

Yeah. I had a person like this on my beat, but his rage-filled comments weren't broadcast on national TV. 🤷‍♀️
Q: Why wait for Congress to release the Epstein files? Why not just do it now?

TRUMP: It's not the question that I mind. It's your attitude. I think you're a terrible reporter. It's the way you ask these questions. You start off with a man who's highly respected asking him an insubordinate question

I took this at the 2016 RNC in Cleveland, right before security had to escort ol' Ted and his wife out due to screams and jeers of people who were really angry he hadn't endorsed Trump!

A 🤡 show indeed.

Yep.
reminded of eric williams's observation about britain's relationship to its history with slavery. "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

"she is a writer, which is a type of poster. stay away."

beautiful, powerful poetry here
people all morning have been pointing out that Joyce Carol Oates is not a good person. yes she is an awful person which comes out pretty often but that is why she is such a brutally effective poster. she is not a friend she is a writer, which is a type of poster. stay away.

I know it's just me being annoying, but watch and see who gives credit to the journalists *actually* covering a story and who just writes something — with no sourcing or credit — for engagement. And remember that! Journalism costs money and the people who actually cover things need your support.

Overwhelm the *existing* White House.

I'm sure there are palatial plans for its destruction and resurrection, too.

Just yikes.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation warned that President Trump’s planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom would “overwhelm the White House itself,” which spans just 55,000 square feet. https://wapo.st/4hmL8rC

Lol, just yesterday someone blocked me for correctly pointing out the Bernie mythology is full of holes.

🤷‍♀️ When people show you who they are, believe them.
Bernie about Platner,

“In all due respect, all right, what I'm worried about, 50,000 Americans may die unnecessarily? And you're worried about a tattoo?"

When I asked about his comments about sexual assault, he said "Have you served four tours of duty?" I said "I have not."

Bernie: "Ok"
