Sigh. Wasted an hour trying to debug an Apple Migration Assistant issue, only to find I had the Wrong Kind of usbc cable.

my wife found this online somewhere recently, and I don't think I've agreed this hard with anything in a long time
Screenshot of a page of a book, first line is highlighted:

The real luxuries in life:

time
health
a quiet mind
slow mornings
ability to travel
rest without guilt
a good night’s sleep
calm and “boring” days
meaningful conversations
home-cooked meals
people you love
people who love you back

jetbrains is far from the first company to make this particular pair of claims but it is simply, on the most fundamental level, impossible to mass-collect people’s terminal and editor contents and also not collect sensitive or personal data.

I realize they […]

screenshot: We’re now adding the option to allow the collection of detailed code‑related data pertaining to IDE activity, such as edit history, terminal usage, and your interactions with AI features. This may include code snippets, prompt text, and AI responses.

That sounds like a lot, and it is, but that’s where the real value for improvements comes from. If you allow us to collect this data, we will make sure that:
No sensitive or personal information is shared.

Scott Brown's defence of the European Convention on Human Rights (#echr) is good but unexceptional. Yet it is a #bbcnews story, because it is this #northnorthamptonshire councillor's reason for leaving the #uk's #conservativeparty […]

Image of black text ona white background:

The ECHR is not merely an international agreement; it is a cornerstone of civil liberties, enshrining rights that protect individuals from arbitrary state power and ensure justice, fairness, and dignity for all. Its origins trace back to the aftermath of World War II, but its spirit echoes the foundational tenets of British liberty as embodied in the Magna Carta of 1215.

The Magna Carta, often hailed as the bedrock of constitutional governance, established that no one—not even the sovereign—is above the law, limiting executive overreach and guaranteeing due process.

The ECHR builds upon this legacy, adapting these ancient protections to modern challenges and safeguarding the very freedoms that make Britain a beacon of democracy.

the biggest problem we *already have* in open source right now, which we have oversimplified into the term "supply chain security", is the lack of understanding that putting a dependency in your project's dependency set (package.json, pyproject.toml, requirements.txt, cargo.toml, etc) is not […]

“By 2038 we will face a challenge that completely eclipses everything that was done in Y2K, with likely 1000 times more connected systems than we had back then. We don’t have either 1000 times more time nor 1000 times more money. We don’t even know where are all these systems that will break.” […]

Side point on #chatcontrol: When I worked on the law in the European Parliament, in the face of questionably legal, and highly problematic behavior by DG HOME, I prepared a whitepaper on why it was such a terrible Idea.

As it is in the public interest, I have decided to make that white paper […]

The FT has described the AI bubble in objective terms. 40% of growth in the US this year has been AI. I find it notable this observation is in a “mainstream” financial paper rather than a blog.

If all of the AI vanished what would be lost? Would your job be harder? would you ba unable to do […]
