THE STRANGER, a 1946 Orson Welles noir, plays like the nightmare version of Bedford Falls. Welles shines as a paranoid Nazi hiding in a small town by marrying Loretta Young while being hunted by government agent Edward G. Robinson. Uses real concentration camp footage shot by Billy Wilder. Terrific.

THE TRAIN, John Frankenheimer's other 1964 thriller, is for people who either loved or hated fluff like THE MONUMENTS MEN and want a much more grounded, nearly documentarian version. Stars Burt Lancaster in one of his best performances as a man who keeps derailing Nazi art trains at the end of WWII.

Having just watched SPINAL TAP II: THE END CONTINUES (excellent and hilarious, btw) the news about Rob Reiner is shocking and heartbreaking

If they didn't keep having the cast rehash the plot for the people scrolling their phones, these Stranger Things episodes would be 44 minutes each

This ignores that the Nazis were openly hypocritical: Goering was a fat, effete boor; Himmler a gawky, chinless, myopic obsessive; Hitler dark-haired and Austrian; all of them far from the supposed German Aryan ideal they preached...hypocrisy is baked into their belief system
I think that somewhere along the way something in Stephen Miller got fundamentally damaged. This is neither an excuse nor a mitigating factor; the dude is genuinely fucking evil and he and everything he stands for should be fought against and stopped. But he is something beyond mere sociopathy.
Since Stephen Miller is in the midst of another of his Aryans-only trantrums, we should note that his family are 20th century immigrants from the shtetl of Antopol (Антопаль) then in the Hrodna gubernia of Russia. Applying his immigration rules, they would all have perished in the Holocaust.

WEAPONS reminded me a bit of BARBARIAN so I was pleasantly surprised to see they were by the same guy. Two for two. A modern day take on Hansel and Gretel wrapped in a Twin Peaks-style mystery skin, it's a great take on old white monsters destroying everything embodied by Amy Madigan's Aunt Gladys.

Bizarre seeing all the interviews with Guillermo del Toro about FRANKENSTEIN asking for his take on AI as if the film doesn't have Christoph Waltz as the 1850s equivalent of a tech billionaire trying to fund a plan to make his syphilitic self immortal

Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN is up there with Coppola's DRACULA, THE WOLFMAN, Egger's NOSFERATU as a sumptuous, gothic, and definitive take on the material. Just enough Hammer Frankenstein to stay fun, it's a tragic, horrific, gory monsterpiece of a film. Solid cast, costumes, effects. See it.
