Shocked to learn of the death of Emma Johnston, the young vice-chancellor (president) at the University of Melbourne. I knew Emma at Sydney, vivacious and charming, a vibrant research leader. A marine ecologist, she was also committed to the humanities, due to undergraduate HPS training at Melbourne

It's absolutely not the point here but interesting to note that international students were getting hauled over the coals in the 1960s for daring to speak out about the White Australia Policy. This is an instinct with a long history...
Scratch an Oz opinion writer and you’ll find a wannabe white nationalist authoritarian.

Do they think one should fight antisemitism with even more indiscriminate racism? Yes they do.

It’s obvious why none of them have a problem with Advance’s race-baiting.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

I wish we pushed for research on the political economy of academia more. It's what takes us beyond "oh why did this one person cite a fake journal article?" into "why do we have a system that rewards people who do not engage with prior research and simply churn out pubs?"

And then they use misleading statistics because they can’t prove their case on merits. Much like their work itself. It’s such a vicious cycle and it undermines everyone.

I can’t stop thinking about that unfortunate Conpact article yesterday. At its core, we are talking about entitlement. White men (some) genuinely believe they lose opportunities to women and/or people of color by virtue of identity. They believe they are inherently more talented and being overlooked

The vast majority of Australians, everyone I've spoken to, my Jewish friends, my Muslim friends, want to just be good to one another in this moment, and avoid inflaming the endless blame cycle.

A loud minority want otherwise. Unfortunately they're among the loudest in the nation

Good news for now from the State Library of Victoria (SLV), which once was one of the world's great libraries. A respite at least until the next external consultant comes along to vandalize the institution, with the support of its 'management'

Some thoughts on One Nation, middle-aged men, and Barnaby, that only had to be *slightly* reviewed by legal:
What’s going on with Gen X men and One Nation? I'm sick of being told to feel sorry for them
One Nation is not going to help rural Australians nor furious Gen X men, both unable to see an end to their housing, financial or energy strife. But hey, neither were the Nationals.

I've said this before, but the repetition in the history of international education in Australia is really striking. Today's example, a submission by the AUS in the mid-1980s: 'The inadequacy of education fundings for Australians should in no way lead to overseas students being used as scapegoats.'
